From the biographical movie The Doors by Oliver Stone, i believe the reason for the uproar was that Morrison didn't change the lyrics like told to, and still continued to say

"I knew that it would be a lie, if i were to say to you, girl we couldn't get much HIGHER"

I actually watched that movie on the old channel, Channel I! They used to show movies every day ... so nice ...
