Tan Wei Xiang's Grupo Clave featuring Miki Hirose
28 Mar 2015, Sat, 9.30pm
Esplanade Recital Studio
Weixiang, also known as Wei, is a first-call jazz pianist and the protégé of Thelonius Monk alumni Victor Gaskin. During his time as an adjunct professor at New York University from 2007-2010, Wei quickly established himself as a musician of note, performing at hallowed jazz venues including the Blue Note and 55 Bar. He has performed with numerous international mainstream jazz icons, Grammy-Award winners and world music giants, and has toured extensively around the world.
This evening, Wei's original compositions and arrangements are performed with the South American-influenced modern jazz ensemble Grupo Clave-an offshoot of the popular Singapore salsa group Havana Social Club. Cuban virtuoso drummer Pablo Calzado, conquero Leo Munoz, bass stalwart Brandon Wong, up-and-coming saxophone talent Sebastian Sibald, and vocal institution Richard Jackson accompany Wei, together with special guest Miki Hirose, a Japanese trumpet wizard and regular of the New York salsa scene.
