Talk box

I was listening to the solo on Weezer's Beverly Hills and came to know that the effect Rivers Cuomo was using was a talkbox. Any idea where to get one in Singapore and which ones are good and value for money?

There are 2 popular ones:

1. The Heil talk box which is now made by Jim Dunlop. This is the original as used by Peter Frampton, Joe Perry etc etc. The set up is tricky and you need a seperate mic to use with it. You should be able to get one through any of the JD resellers in Sg. (probably on back order though)

2. The Rocktron Banshee which is a lot simpler and can sit in your normal effects chain. It has an amp built into it so in theory could power a speaker at the end of your effects chain for you to parctice at home without a gtr amp. Looks promising and is getting good reviews. I'm not sure if there is a rocktron distributor in Sg so you might have to buy it from overseas.

A proper talkbox doesn't use a mic. The heil sound talkbox is one if these, it doesn't use a mic.

You'll need an amplifier to give you sound which will come out of a tube instead of a speaker. The tube is put into your mouth and you use your mouth to shape the tone in which you will then 'sing' into a normal vocal mic.

Sorry, both posts as confusing as each other. End of the day you DO need a mic to make the Heil work but yes it can be your normal vocal mic. If you dont use one currently, you will need one. The closer the tube is to the mic, the better it works.

Config as follows:
Gtr>Efx>Amp> Speaker out of the Amp> Talkbox> Speaker

You need to be careful as the talkbox is taking the initial speaker load from your amp (at I think 8ohms, could be wrong).Impedance mismatching can cause damage to your amp. There are many old rock nroll stories about roadies blowing up amp heads with talk boxes.

Once the tube is in your mouth you dont need to sing, just mouth the words or sounds you want the talk box to make.

I had one many years ago but frankly it was a pain in the ass for one or two songs. Any more than that is overkill. At the time I was sometimes doing 2 gigs a day and I opted to go for the most simple (and least room for error) setup I could which was wah/chorus/delay/amp....simple but effective.

Then the tube gets gunky and dirty and you don't really want to put it in your mouth and you have to clean it or something. Haha the horrors of talkboxes.
