sustain usually refers to single notes. when u hit it, and hold it, and it goes on for a period of time. for some, longer = better. this can be affected by gain and volume, if im not wrong. thus, also, the creation of the sustainers, which are pickups which send out magnetic "pulses" to cause the string to vibrate w/o u hitting them, giving u a smooth even violin like sound.
