Studying the Styles of Hendrix and Jimmy Page

Hi guys,

Been playing guitar for a number of years now but mostly rhythm and simple lead stuff... now feeling the urge and inspiration to IMPROVE and learn from the famous guitarists to help improve my playing, especially lead...

Been thinking a bit and decided to start off by learning the styles of Hendrix and Jimmy Page... wondering whether of any of you guys have tried doing the same thing?

What songs do you start with? Any useful resources you guys came across on and offline? I'm thinking of going to esplande library first to try to get some tabs of these guitar masters... hopefully you guys can share your experiences too and we can learn together... thanks a lot!

Happy pickin! :)

My suggestion is not to learn any of their songs. Seriously, you don't want to sound like a clone. What you want is to sound original but to have the VIBES/FEEL of these players. For that, the best thing you can do is to stay way from playing their songs. It's alright to pick out a few passages.

The seconds most important thing you should do is to listen and to understand their VIBES/FEEL. What it is that they're doing? Why? WHen? Understanding them as musicians at play is the best thing you can ever do. Again, you want to play with their VIBES/FEEL and NOT play exactly like them.

Cheers
RoRK

thanks for the tip, yup, my intention is not to be a clone... definitely!

having played a number of years already, I already have a style of my own... but studying them could help expand my vocab on the guitar :) Hope I'm makin sense

Hendrix-chord voicings extraordinaire

Learn Castles made of sand, Wind cries Mary, Little Wing, Like a Rolling stone

Just learn them first to get the groove and the style of playing around with chords and lead lines simultaneously, he had a very rythmic style(prob from touring with 60's R n B bands), then expand from there.

To get the vibe /feel (whatever)of the player, buy the jimi hendrix autobiography book, you can more or less understand how and why he plays that certain way and what were his motivations when writing the songs.

:D

I'm not a guitar god.

But what i can recommend you is that try not to learn guitar playing from tabs. It's really not the proper way.

You may learn only to play certain song if you learn thru tabs. Of couse tabs from songs and "tabs for scales" are different.

if you are beginner and would like to play around, tabs would be a good idea. But after a few months, it best to jump out from the tab book and start exploring your own such as scales, theories, your own humming and musical notes.

Its hard but at least you are not dependant on a guitar tab book.

PS : Jimi Hendrix Lives Forever...

ultimate-guitar.com has several hendrix and jimmy page tabs.

IMO, it's helpful to use tabs so you'd find out how those guys make the sounds they're making. I mean, we all need a hint right?
Once you learn the tricks, explore and expand

snuffleupagus: "Learn Castles made of sand, Wind cries Mary, Little Wing, Like a Rolling stone"

bro snuffleupagus bro, how come you didn't include Red House? It was THE essential song for us to practice blues improvisation last time! Remember we used to jam Red House like 20 to 30 mins until we really really ran out of ideas!!!

The 2-CD "Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions" live album was my bible when I first started blues/rock guitar playing. And of course bro snuffleupagus bro aka "The Bluesman" and Singapore's youngest Jimi Hendrix in those days was my Shifu before he became a rapper!!! The most important element in Jimmy Page's style is to go for aggression rather than accuracy and precision. Play as dirty as you can. Major and Minor Pentatonic and occasionally the Harmonic Minor are all he used. Remember also to close your eyes and wear your Les Paul as low as you can to acheive maximum mojo!!!

Bro rover bro, sorry to reply so late, Redhouse no need to learn one, that one just "feel" the fretboard the whole way ok already!

The rover aka simon is one of the guitarists to watch out for in Singapore- superlatives fail me lah, ok one word "Brilliant!"

Check out his band zero sequence, you wun regret one!

Bro Rover, basket, paiseh me u neh neh u.

oh yah to the original poster, also listen to "bold as love" and "wait till tomorrow"

mastering his groove is fundamental for your journey into the realm of hendrix

cheers!
