Hey...anybody know what tonal difference it makes between Pure Nickle, Pure Steel, Nickle-plated Steel, Stainless steel electric guitar strings and the likes?
I recently switched from SIT nickle wounded to SIT stainless steel. The nickle wounded ones are brighter sounding compared to the stainless steel. I would prefer SS anyday.
Pure nickel strings have a more mellow tone. IMO they're better for blues, classic rock and such. Nickel plated sounds brighter and it's more commonly used, I believe. Stainless steel strings are the brightest and loudest. Good sustain too. Crisp metallic sound. BUT it wears down your frets faster because of the rough texture.
Never really heard of "pure steel" strings before but yep. My 2 cents' worth.
SS strings start off brighter than nickel and nickel wound. But after it wears off it becomes more mellow than either as well (or at least the nickel wounds).
CM has one helluva SS strings set. The texture of their SS strings is equivalent to the texture of most nickel wound strings offered by other manufacturers, eg. GHS boomers, Ernie Ball slinkies etc. Now you just gotta imagine how nice the CM nickel wounds feel 8O
Me likey dead SS strings super good for that warm crunchy Gn'R power chords sound.
