Strings - Factor in Guitar Playing?

Soooo...

I was recommended by my guitar teacher to try Elixirs so i picked up a pack of 10-46 nanowebs last week (wtf22bucksapackburnsmywallet) and restrung my guitar with it.

I used D'addarrios 10-46s. The Elixirs felt really sleek and all but when i tried to play a simple alternate picking exercise i was practicing prior i realized i couldn't do it AT ALL whereas i was able to play it at moderate speed with D'addarios (decently but not perfect la).

I can't describe it - somehow the Elixirs have a different feel to it. (picking)

The question is this - have you ever tried different brands of strings which you don't like? (uncoated/coated)

Also, how do they affect your playing? Like do you need some 'adjustment' when you take a change from using your usual strings?

Or maybe i just have bad technique....

try cleartone strings. Life of elixirs + better grip on strings like uncoated strings.

I have the same issue as you when it comes to elixir strings btw. I find that they lack the grip of uncoated strings. They do have an advantage in reducing string squeak noise though...at the cost of slightly muffled highs.

anyone can recommend you any string brands out there but if they don't work for you then it defeats the purpose. try as many string brands as you wish, stick to the ones that work for you regardless of brand names/ prices 8-)

id recommend that you use thicker strings .10 or .11 thicker more grip, better tone, more difficult to play, more painful but for me the feeling of using thicker string different and also using thicker string will have a more range of dynamics for me...........:D

I went from D'Addario to Dean Markley Blue Steels, tried a bit of Cleartone along the way, and finally ended up at Everly B-52s. The B-52s really work for me, not sure if it will for you, but there's just something about them.. feels like they have a tad bit more tension than most other strings.

Brought my guitar to Beez that day and even he said that the .009s i was using felt a very slight bit heavier than the usual..

I'm a Ernie Ball fan... They sound trebly when first outta the pack, but give 'em a little playing time... (say about 4 hrs...) and they're smooth, nice and rounded... Slinkies ftw!!

Its up to personal preference... I'm pretty envious of people who use Elixirs and like 'em, cos my strings start rusting in right about day 3... or 4... (Sweat, Salty sea air, and guitar strings don't mix well...)

that's right. if it's a personal preference, then we need to make it clear as such

For some reason, using different strings doesn't affect my playing. It's all about which ones I personally prefer. So far, the only string brand I avoid using is GHS because they seem to break very easily, and I had that problem with pack after pack of GHS strings.

hahahaha, same thing happened to me when i switched from my usual D'addario to Elixirs.
however its up to personal playing styles and the player itself, for my friend can really shred with his Elixirs.

Ernie Ball ftw though =)

I've always used D'Addrios .010s and I'm fine with that. Feels nice, but I wish the bottom three were a lot stiff. Feels a bit to slinky for my taste

On a seperate note, anyone knows where to buy Ernie Ball Nickel Slinky Skinny Top/Heavy Bottom Electric Guitar Strings? Hardly see the .010 version anywhere in SG...

eh Barty. elixers cost 9.99usd here!

Still quite ex what.. :???:

I'm going back to D'addarios after this set.

I can't get used to them Elixirs, even after re-setting up my guitar a few times.

But it still feels uber new tho. Even after like 1 week and a half.

Btw, how's LA treating ya? ;)
