To all shredder out there.

need some advice on strings.
right now embarking on my road to learn shredding. i have some question to ask abt strings.

1. As i have pretty smaller finger( especially pinky), wat the recommended gauge to use?, brand? if gonna shred
gonna start my a;ss off thru a diet of rock dicipline by john petrucci and full shred/arp by yngwie. i really their his sound but knew that i don have the finger size like him. what light string to use?

just a guide... 0.09 would be good for shredding. Some people like even lighter gauges or slightly heavier (0.08 and 0.1)

finger size isn't a problem actually. it's how much u want to practice finger training to match up to the strings. I've heard people who swear by 0.12s etc. Of course, u'll need to train ur fingers much more so u don't strain them.

with thicker strings, usually u get better tone. i think it's a balance/tradeoff.

thank thor666..
that the high e i guess you mentioned?
wat abt the other 5 strings??...
what specific model would you recommend?

i used to have ernie ball( super slinky) pink package.. no problem with it...
cos to me... all the strings( of the same gauge) sound the same.

it only when i was playing for a gig( nu-metal) which request for low detuning, that when i switch to a heavy one. not my type..

for my own preference i like the ernie ball yellow package slinkies.

0.1 0.13 0.17 0.26 0.36 0.46

i'm using a fender strat and i like my strings to sound even throughout.

if u're looking for heavy bass sounds, then get heavier gauges.. up to 0.52.

i also like fender bullets but they're too ex for me. don't find the additional cost worth it.

i think VAI uses .07 to get his signature super shark screams!!
i don even noe anyplace in singapore holdin so lite..
anyone one?
would like to try out..

for practise i suggest D Addario.... good string to train... cheap, longlasting for its prices and the sound alrite lar.

i dun recommand light gauge for practise.... Defeats the purpose.... Must not onli train ur speed... but ur finger strength also must train up.... larger gauge will be hard but once u want to play/perform.... ur finger will fly.... i knoe of a guy who practises metallica solo on an acoustic... although the sound sucks... but once u giv him a proper electric.... WOAH!!

Training on acoustics is a killer man! Shreds your hands and make them cramp up! haha

Personally, I feel training on .10 is not bad, good balance. But for performance I'll go with .9s, more expressive. Anyway, it's a personal preference.
