Straplocks or guitar strap with built in straplocks thingy?

I'm deciding between a set of schaller strap locks or getting a guitar strap with locks. I swing my guitar alot and just slammed it onto the floor today..luckily it still works so i dont want the slamming part to happen again. Which is better?

i think the last thing on your mind is to choose a guitar based on whether it comes with straplocks or not. they are easily installable on most guitars.

my guitars come with dunlops and they havent failed me yet. the 2 most popular choices for straplocks are either shallers or dunlops. there are many other devices available such as the cliplock from planet waves and the dimarzio strap locks which operate in a different way.

Uh...I'm not deciding on a guitar. I'm weighing the pros and cons between a standard straplock set or a strap which has the straplock thing attached.

i just use a cheap ibanez strap i got from sweelee for 6 bucks ... havent dropped my guitar and it doesn't scratch the paint off cause there's no plastic rubbing against the finish..quite good i must say.

Hey, do you guys know whether the schaller straplock can be installed on an epiphone les paul? I've tried the dunlop one but the screw doesnt work for the epiphone...it doesnt go tight. then the original epiphone screw wont work with the dunlop straplock. (hope you guys get what i mean)

the dunlop one can be installed on the tele though....but must use the tele screw. so troublesome...frustrated me the whole night fixing the thing up. plus its kinda bulky.

you could buy the planet waves cliplock straps, they rub out a lil of your paint though, so you could tape the rubber sides... also i recomand levys leather straps, no not those 20 dollar ones, yes those 100 dollars one, they dont tear, wear no matter how hard you swing one of those...

The BEST strap that comes with a straplock is the Dimarzio Cliplock straps. Vai uses it and prances around in it... so does Gilbert, Satch and more. Swee Lee sells them for ard $34 I believe.

Between the Dunlop and Schaller, both are good , althought both are not as quiet as the DImarzio. IMO, the schaller is not as secure as the Dunlop due to just having a nut secure the strap lock, that nut can wriggle loose and it did for me. But the Schaller is less bulky than the Dunlop and wouldn't damage your strap as much.

have you noticed whether the schaller screw to screw on the straplock is similar to the dunlop one? and do you have problems in installation? the only method i could think of is redrilling the hole...which would be one hell of a job.

i'm very anti-planet-waves-strap lock strap, its supposed to be a strap lock, but mi guitar has dropped even after i "locked" it, and i don't trust it anymore, anw dat strap is long gone

now i juz use sum leather strap, with the dunlop lock thingy that subversion posted abt, and i dun take mi strap off mi guitar

Take a toothpick, stick it into the hole... start screwing in the straplock.. then break off the toothpick end thats sticking out. If done neatly, you'll have it secure.

Tried and tested.

I'm using jim Dunlop Strap Lok.

It depends on what type of strap you wish to own. Say for the Planetwaves one, if i'm not wrong it comes in only 2 colours, and that is greyish silver and black.

I'm using an orange strap, to go with my guitar that is. So i bought the loks, put it together wiht my strap and just "click" it in. Really easy, fast, and efficient.

Regarding screwing the straplock on with a toothpick, it would be safer to use some wood glue and coat the toothpick before putting it in just in case the whole thing slips out when playing. i did that to my epi and it works great althought removing the toothpick in future might be more difficult

I would label it, imo, the holy grail of straps  Screws right in, no strapbuttons to poke out, straps are easily detachable for storage. Get one if you haven't already :D

Actually, this might not be necessary... if you put in enough toothpicks (usually 1 would do) and if you use those better quality ones (those with 2 sharp ends?). If the toothpick is big enough and not made of crap soft wood, the strap screw would be very tight... not easy to rip it out... I would compare it to trying to pull out a straplock from a basswood guitar.

Putting wood glue would be pretty unnecessary IMO... and besides, who swings the guitar around their head with that much force? :)

Another reason to use Dimarzio Cliplocks: BlackMoo uses it.

Ok that was lame crap haha. anyway.

I'm using a white cliplock now, have been using it for some time. Its seriously very stable and will not come off at all. Your strap worry days are over. You can do anything you want and your guitar will be where you want it to be. Its also super smooth and comfortable. The guitar feels almost weightless on my shoulders as compared to normal straps. Do give it a shot. Personally I like the white. But the Electric Blue and Neon Green are pretty shocking too :) .
