STANDARD Celestion drivers VS CUSTOM-VOICED Celestion drivers

Hello everyone,

Ive always wondered if there are any differences between a standard celestion driver and a custom voiced one (Vox) Are the custom voiced drivers generally inferior to the standard ones? Im refering to the G12M from celestion and its counterpart from a Vox Cabinet in particular (Custom voiced G12m for V112NT)

Thank you for reading

Custom-voiced speakers are usually designed by the manufacturer to the company's specifications. Whether or not it's "inferior" depends on the blueprint used. For instance, the VX12 used in Vox's AC4 extension cabinet isn't exactly the best speaker around, but the Elite-80 designed for use in Egnater's Rebel 20 sounds pretty damn amazing. "Standard" drivers are just basically their main production line.

One impt thing to note is to give time for the speaker to break in.. Any speaker expensive or cheap takes quite a well to break in, so dont be too quick to change..

anyone tried different amp heads through the same cabinet and realised it was the cabinet that was colouring their sound?

Nope, but I can see how it does affect the sound. Construction and dimensions of the cabinet do play a significant part in shaping the tone. I tend to prefer over-sized cabs.

Ive paired up a Blackstar HT5 head with my Vox NT V112 cab (G12M Greenback) I think it sounds fine so far, my only complain with it is the sound being slightly muddy.
