Okay. So usually when you are the lead vocals of the band, you are the frontman/person who has to talk alot to the crowd right?
or something like that.
Anyone of you too shy or WAS too shy to... well, do that?
Those who are never shy or overcame that thing, how did you do it?
I mean its like, even in choir sectionals, sometimes you're asked to sing alone... we all get tensed and end up 'croaking'...

okay, let me get to the point.

What are the ways vocalists overcome stage fright/whatsoever ?

Urm. Scream? Haha.. Get the rest of your band to more or less talk to the crowd too, esp when you don't know what to say, or suddenly lose your ability to talk. =\

Just a suggestion :?

one advice i can give... not sure if it works for u.. but it defintely works for me when i perform or do anything in front of crowds...

Dun loitter on stage.. only go on stage once its time.. like run through what u want to do ... den only when its time then u go... like tt once u go on stage it is just completely one thing at a time... sometimes not ur turn u stare at audience.. ur mind starts to think too much and u get more kan chiong

will wearing painted shades(blind you from seeing the audience) be kind of rude. It doesn't need to be so... blinded. is it rude? how about eye contact?

i can't drink, underage...

thanks anyway!

hey sycododo, i used to have major stage fright...(before playing in a band even)...when i was in secondary school...i asked this girl, who seems to be very comfortable on stage how she does it...

she said she's not scared cos everyone who's looking at her are her FRIENDS...so why should you be scared of friends right..?

so yeah...i took the advice and it worked...i was more confident onstage when i have the thinking in my head...

hope this helps!

That's true. It's not like anyone will condemn you for saying something 'wrong' (in fact there's no wrong thing to say). So just try to relax, think of it as a jam session (without aircon if you're outdoors) and the old studio uncle is watching you all jam cause he's bored and thinks your music is decent.

Before your slot you could also do things to take your mind off performing. Mingle with the audience while offstage. Talk with your friends. Stuff that prevents you from thinking about 'screwing up' and getting the heebie-jeebies.

But usually after the first song it's easier to loosen up, I reckon?

hi sycododo! it takes lots of singing and performing in front of the audience to overcome stage fright. once you get used to being a performer the rest will follow like getting at ease with the people, talking to them on stage etc...

Haha! I usually die on stage but somehow my outer appearance doesn't show it. But I'll actually be all jelly welly inside. =\

Gee Ash. I think that'd really help. I'll try the next time I take on the stage. Haha.

my advise: - Look at the crowd before you go up... once U get settled with the "crowd" factor - the rest is plain sailing. Dont be afraid to look or sound larger than life (or do the things U normally wudnt do in real life)....all the antics will wow the audience & there's nothing like a little initial buzz to get U & the crowd going ....then everything else is a piece of cake....

take it from me..been thee dun dat 8)

I agree with fgl.

Drinking, wearing sunglasses or doing other stuff to distract you from what the real problem is may help in a way but I feel it is not as effective.

In my opinion, whenever we do something, we gotta prep our minds. Like UFC or boxing, the fighters will psyche themselves out for a long period of time before they enter the ring. Soccer players etc will pray in their room. I think it is best you understand that you've got a job to do and that is to do ur best and give your best performance you can on stage. You've got 1 chance and you will/must succeed. Of course, there will come a time when you may take this too seriously and end up being nervous instead. "WHAT IF I SCREW UP?!" Don't ever let such thoughts flow inside ur mind man. Stare at the crowd like your a king. Nevertheless, don't be too howlian la. A lot of times the singer talks to the crowd like ... how other bands in America talks to the crowd ... I think if you are still new to the scene, let the action do the talking and ppl will appreciate you more for that. Its Singapore culture that the audience are not as enthusiastic as others but over time it will change.

Whao thats a lot of poo. Anyway the radio in this website featuring a few other bands' songs really kick ass man.

Stage Fright.
This is natural and you are not alone. Even experience singers encounter stage fright as every experience on stage is different.

Singers might fall during a performance, microphone might go faulty during singing, mind goes blank and can't remember lyrics etc etc...

Most importantly, you must do your homework. Familiarise with the stage (find every opportunity you can to do so), mentally map out the steps you wanna take on the stage. Before you go up stage, take 3 deep breathe. This will ease your tensity and also to allow your lungs to expand so that it is less tense and therefore, able to store more air. Make eye contact with the audiences (even if you can't see them), pretend as if you can. Singing is a form of communication, so you need to communicate your feelings, emotions and the story behind the song to the audience. Touch their hearts with your soul and facial expression (but do not over do it).

All the best!
