splitting coils

hi

i'm thinking of splitting the coils on my les paul copy. i havent played a guitar with split coils, so how would it sound? would it be comparable to singlecoils? how much would it cost and where is the best place to get it done?

thanks

My guitar can be use as single coil ... but seems that the tone become thinner and maybe suitable for playing funk .. Think so ... my opinion only ...

since u've never tried a guitar with the coil split function..

it would also mean that u dont noe how it sounds like..

so therefore..installing a coil splitter is unnecessary expense.since u have no use for it..

but then again..heh..single coils are still the best..but frankly i prefer the cleans of the split coil rather den humbucker..

ok..i might be bs-ing. :D

try searching at www.ibanez.com (singapore websites) they have come out guitar model that supported splitting coils ... and there is sample on it ... juz try look see look see ... should get ... maybe the sample can briefly described what is the tone like .... when its put to single coil mode ... thats the most i can help ... hope its helpfull

Nothing great about coil splitting. You need a humbucker with 4 wires, two per coil. Instead of connecting the two coils in series (which makes it a regular humbucker), you simply use one coil and ignore the other. Technically it should sound like single coil pickups, but in practice most coil splits I've heard, sound a little thinner. About what you'd hear from a stock strat pickup. Definitely softer than texas specials or lace sensors.

Edit: I'd try coil splitting on a fender. A Les Paul is made for humbuckers with distortion.

if your humbuckers are 2-conductor, then, you'll need to get those 4-conductor humbuckers to have the option to split the north & south pole coils.

for such humbuckers, do be aware of the color codes of the different brands:

you can buy such push-pull pots at Ranking Sports & Music in Bras Basah. they sell in pairs, for around $10 ~ $12.

here are two ways to add push-pull pots to split the coils:

if you can DIY, just follow the schematics.

coil-splitting gives you a lot more pickup configs for tones.
e.g.
single coil neck pickup
single coil bridge pickup
combo of the two above

it's worth the try to DIY. :)

thanks all

i think i'll try to diy. only my humbuckers are 2-conductors. can i still do it myself? how much would the whole project cost?

Hmm.

I've tried out this Daisy Rock guitar at Music Ensemble, the kind people over there put it in one of their jam studios and i found the guitar to be incredibly versatile (if you're willing to over-look its red-burst finish and "girly" brand tag) and the only gripe i had during the experience is that the amps weren't grounded properly so when I split the coils, there was the expected irritating buzzing sound which made me.. well... damn irritated.

But other than that, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience (good tones too). Go and try (maybe book the studio first) because I think it's the real thing.

If it's only 2 conductor then you can't have coil split. You'll have to get new 4 conductor pickups. As for the price, the sky's the limit. You can get decent 4-conductor HB's for less than $90-100. Not too sure about the LP sized HB's but their cool rails, little 59 etc (strat single coil size) are in that price range.
