Sonodyne Studio Monitor SM50AK

wow! finally someone asks about the sonodyne ...

i'm not a sonodyne user but i heard it in action during Broadcast Asia 07 ... my first impression: it gave me very good stereo image and the frequencies are very well balanced ... can't say more, didn't have time to sit down and test it out ...

it was pumping out some jazz stuff when i was at the booth ... highs were clear but not obstrusive ... lows wasn't overpowering but enough for you to hear what was going on ... mids was liquid smooth ...

Dude, they are of a diffrent league man. You are comparing two very diffrent types of products on diffrent levels. You would compare the KRK's rockits or M-audio bx-5a with the hs50. I don't stand as a sales man LOL

Using a pair of the Sonodyne SM100AK's currently with my KRK sub. Previously was using KRK RP5's.

I'm very happy with the purchase so far. The detail is excellent - I can actually hear subtle changes in the reverbs that different producers used on Mary J Blige's lead vocal on her album, for example. Can also tell differences in sibilance for many albums that previously sounded the same (now I realize some albums never use enough de-esser!)

Separation is good, just nice, stuff is still blended together but you can hear into the separate elements of a mix. Stuff does not sound extremely distinctly separated like the M-Audio EX66s (but some people might actually like that a lot. For me I like the musical elements to still sound cohesive). Tone wise it's very neutral and compared to the RP5s the drums and vocals sound a lot more natural.

Overall I think it's a very musical sounding monitor, not overly clinical, and a pretty good representation of what stuff might sound like on a good hi fi, and so far mixes have been translating quite well. :)

Hey, great to see that there are people talking about these speakers, some questions that i would like to ask.

Hmm how much did u buy ur SM100AK for? i would suppose that its way out of my budget i guess... haha... so for me am actually considering the SM50AK cause i heard the materials that they used to construct it is really high quality.........

Initially i was very keen on buying the Rokit 5 since the reviews online were really great.

BUt now, the new Mackie MR5 is out for the same price. about $490. and the SM50AK i could get it at $699.

SInce u owned the rp5 before do you think that the additional $200 for the SM50AK is worth it? Bearing in mind that i am using it in my room which is pretty small 3mx3m

I bought the SM100AK for $1200 a pair, made the Resolution guy promise that I could take them back and buy the Mackie HR629 instead if I'm not satisfied after a week. But so far I like them I think. :)

I also listened to the MR series in the shop - the shop has pretty bad acoustics, but even so, I didn't get a sense that the MR series sounded a lot better than the KRK RP series. Didn't strike me as having the potential that the Sonodynes did in the shop.
Detail, imaging, etc all struck me as quite average.

If the SM50AK has similar characteristics to the Sm100AK i'd advise you to get them, they'd be in a totally different class than the RP5 altogether. However, if you haven't sorted out your room acoustics yet, better to do that with your existing speakers than to get new ones. It'll be money much better spent for much better sound than simply putting new speakers in an awful sounding room. :)
