Hey guys,

I am sean and I am a newbie here. I am currently serving my national service and I am on my block leave now. I currently own a squier HSS and a sansamp GT2 pedal. I play and listen to classic rock (Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Mr. Big, U2) with some occasional songs from modern music (3 doors down, yellowcard

As you know, as a national serviceman, I do not have the luxury of time to improve my guitar playing. So I am here to seek your advice on how to utilize my time well. Should I train my technique, learn music theory or play more songs so that I can enjoy my bookout days with songs?

Thanks. I am currently mastering here without you by 3 doors down, seize the day by a7x (the main solo first) and thinking of attempting Maybe I'm a Leo By Deep Purple.

And i am looking for a band as well..so I dunno whether time permits

It is important to learn theory first. Next, you start learning some techniques. Lastly, you learn some of your favourite songs.

Get a Pocket Pod at your next, permanent, camp. Bring your guitar and play when you loboing. May not be too much time, but at least your guitar is with you.

I always brought my guitar to camp every book in. Left it in the office and play or practiced with it whenever I was free. Before my pocket pod and while I was serving many many extras and weekends, I brought my amp (!). It was great to blast it without fear of neighbors and policecars =).

Guard duty no worries also bring guitar hehe. When I more laojiao and was a stable guard comm then yeah lah. I don't suggest you do that.

Do finger exercises like Chromatics or Scales. Do pulloffs and hammers, slides and interval playing. http://soft.com.sg/forum/how-guitar/126048-intervals-intervals-intervals.html on intervals.

Of course learn songs either by ear or with some paper in front of you. Digest theory bit by bit. But always put in effort to learn it. Best, get a teacher for a couple of weekends on guitar music theory. Then bring it all to camp and digest.

Please do adjust this advice with the state in your camp, your vocation, you regimentation in camp. Your experience will vary. I suggest being more garang about guitaring in camp when you know how the system is there.

A friend brought his Orvilles to his Coy in Tekong along with his Marshall amp, and let chao kengs play after they OOC. I will knock them down first then they can play. Hehe.
