my guitar teacher rekons it will help with ym technique so I can playu metal and stuff.

Anyone have any experience with learning blules to help technique? how well does it help?

Blues is all about phrasing, as its a "feel" type of music. so if u are good in blues, u are good in ur phrasing.

Mhod Nassir I think, his name is pretty long. big malaysian guy, bald..umm good guitar player.

Some people might know him, James knows him, or knows of him.

I wouldn't go so far as to say you can play anything if you can play blues, but it will get you through most situations, particularly improvisation.

remember that metal is a sub-genre of rock, and rock came from the blues

anw same here, mi guitar teacher always emphasizes on the blues more than anything else, more than metal, more than jazz

playing the blues and learning the blues scale will propel your playing since the minor pentatonic is almost the same scale, and will also teach you to feel the groove

blues is: 10% pentatonic+blue note, 90% feel.

You might be able to shred like there's no tomorrow, but it doesn't mean you can play blues 8)

playing blues to help technique probably means learning to play with more emotion. Playing and listening to more blues will probably help you learn how to play with more emotion. instead of blitzing off on "faster than thou" speed picking runs or legato runs .. puncturing your leads with tasty fills or held notes will add dynamics and depth to your playing and will probably make you sound better.. so work on your slow bends, vibrato, wide vibratos, double stops, pre-bends etc..... my 2 cents

BB king is one good example. He can make a few notes sound so groovy

I agree ... Blues is all about feel ... and it lays down the foundation for Rock and hence metal ... though many metal guitarists add-in classical scales like 7 modes of harmonic minor. But there are blues player that plays blues and yet without losing it's feel totally ... one person you may want to emulate is Stevie Ray Vaughan.

His generation of blues is pretty influenced by rock .... but it's still quite heavily influenced. Other artist are like BB King, Muddy waters or johnny winter. Some other technical players are like Reuden Ford(more fusion), Robert Cray, Jeff Back, Eric Clapton. They sound more modern though.

And i disagree that if you play blues you can play anything. I have friends who can play jazz and blues ... but doesn't mean they can play metal or rock. It's totally different technic .... but if you can really reallyt excel in one genre ... you will find it easier to learn a new genre.

You may try blues and jazz later on .... coz Jazz will really set your theorectical foundation solid. You will be surprised how little you know about music untill you know jazz or classical. Have fun in your exploration!! :)

hmm if you can phrase properly , you will probably be able to play alot other genres. I didn't mean to say if you can play blues, you can shred etc.. maybe the way i put it is wrong..
