snare drum hits

hey guys.just wondering if anyone can teach me about this.

my friend told me when i hit the snare i should also hit the rim at the same time to make a "solid" sound.can anyone teach me how to do this? mine sounds dam weird.

thanks

It is the sound produced by hitting the rim and the head of a drum at once, with a drum stick. Rimshots are usually played to produce a more accented note, and are typically played loudly. However, soft rim shots are possible.

There are two standard types of rim shots in marching percussion. The first, more common shot is called a "ping shot". In a ping shot, a drum stick hits the head and the rim at the same time, with the bead very close to the rim. This produces a high pitched sound. The other, called a "gock," is produced by putting the bead of the drum stick close to the center, the rim making contact closer to the hand than in a ping. This makes a lower sound.

Just a quick tip:

Always practice playing rimshots with both hands. Some of my students come to me and could barely play rimshots with their right hand simply becos they've only been practicing playing them in grooves (left hand rimshots on 2 and 4). During fill ins they would sound untidying simply becos all accented notes on left are rimshots and right are missing some. Disco grooves suffered too.....

Good exercise:

Play accented studies with accents on rimshots and ghost on centre of snare.

Paper...what your friend is saying is: - Whwn you say for instance do a simple Rock-Beat (2 & 4 on snare and 1 & 3 on Bass Drum).....BY hitting the Snare at 2 & 4 using Rim-Shot...you get the "Pak-Pak" sound which will make your snare sounds solid.....If you say do this...Your Bass Drum must also be as solid using (Heel-Up techniques...stamping it hard on the Bass-Drum)...together it sound solid....that's all.

your Rim-Shot sound weird because, sometimes it's loud, sometimes it's softer, and worst sometimes you miss...am I correct?

When I tried doing learning Rim-Shot just using Left Hand on the snare as in a groove (eg the basic rock groove in it's simplest even).....I had trouble like you - it sound weird.

As Alvin quoted. Rim-Shot is best learn using both hands.

For instance practicing Rim-Shot using 16th note like ..... 1eta, 2eta, 3eta, 4eta - Your accent can fall on 1 or e or + or a (1 + is RH & e a = LH .....sounds very easy right paper?...in actual fact...not really.

Paper you should have an instructor to teach you this.....He will most likely teach you

(1) all accent on 1 2 3 4 (meaning all on Right hand)...than all on (e) then (+) then (a) - this is the basics.

(2) you will then mix and match this accent to create something nice....there are quite many an exercise on this.

(3) Then you play them in your pocket - play it around your kit....using (2)

Accents are important as you could apply them also when doing certain Rudiments.

As in (1) - accenting on 1eta type can be applied later on using Paradiddle, Inward Paradiddle, Reverse Paradiddle etc...The concept is the same - accenting on either 1 or e or + or a ---just that you are using Paradiddle only now.

(4)..you have done the basics (as an example above - I just mention a few here).....

(5) Imagine now - using above accent (Right & Left Hand)...you feet is now learning doing Bass-Drum at 1234 to some Samba-Beat (where the Hi-Hat is at +....and your Bass Drum at 1a, 2a, 3a, 4a - keeping the accents whether in 16th notes (singles) or doing (doubles RRLL) or (Rudiments as in Paradiddle) with your hands and accenting - that's add up to even tougher....but FUN I would say.

Now - paper....you can understand all the above here, but....believe me - you need a proper instructor to teach you all these...there are stick control here and it must sound right....

Accenting is not as easy as it seems - to a fresh drummer...even myself, I did not perfect it...cause I still cannot accent nicely at reasonale speed...

Get an instructor...Paper..Accenting when done well is lovely and very applicable in many real life drumming situation..

Cheers !

haha thanks dude.......but i dont have an instructor.no time .no money.................haha ill try figure it all out.thanks all =D

^this thing is not as simple as u think. it takes a lot more than just hitting the snare. technique, stroke.. that all take an account to produce a good sound of snare..

I've had friends who tell me all their diff techniques for producing these rim shot sounds too and I just got really confused, heh.
to blurred--believe it or not not everyone's a genius at drumming and it'll take some people who are uncoordinated monkeys (ie, me) some time to get these techniques right. try not to judge.

i'm no genius, but if u can't hit a rim shot properly, which is basic , very basic u won't be a le to do anything.it's not rocket science its a rim shot.
there aren't tht many ways on how to do a rim shot, to the best of my knowledge.

Many beginner drummer (like myself before when I started out drumming and as Paper question here is asking) - How to do a Rim-Shot...( AS IN A GROOVE..for Basic Rythmn Pattern)....meaning - Doing Rim Shot using the Left-Hand only..eg A Basic Rock Beat...where 2 & 4 is on snare and 1 & 3 is on Bass-Drum.

So many thinks - it's easy just using your left-hand doing the Rim Shot as in here.....This also need alot of practice....once you get acustom to using it in this kind of Groove - you will not miss it - True in a way.

When someone says ... Rim shot is not as easy as it seems- it means, they see the above as in a different perspective - The above is not the best way for a Beginner Drummer to practice Rim-Shot (if he wants to be good in this area). To practice Rim-Shot in a proper manner....one have to practice Rim Shot using both hands (many a times incorporating Ghosting)....so that accenting Rim-Shot can be play in any ways to make it sound nicer. This is not easy , as it needs alot of practice...to make it sound good and even better through time when done correctly (control isn required here) - that's why I say.."Ones need a Drumming Instructor to teach, show you and let you listen to the sound how he does it" ... before we can even develop speed for this Rim-Shot Accenting.

I love to watch and see drummer playing Rim-Shot..it's beautiful, dynamical and musical too...I've been dying to master this, and I work so hard on it for months ... YET I find myself not up to the level those drummers are doing it - so I know - It's not as easy as it seems to be.

Like I say...Drumming is easy (most people can play it)...but to master it (meaning play it well here)....is not easy man Bro.....If everyone can learn drumming by themselve and become a fantastic drummer without a Proper Instructor (maybe there is - one in a million only)...this guy is just Genius and is Cut and Born To Drum...

an apprroach is u can try triplet to practice both hand on rim shot.
1 ta ta 2 ta ta 3 ta ta 4 ta ta, accent on down beat, play rim shot, it helps. with your left, keep stepping the hi hat on down beat, u train left foot, and rim shot, triplet feel simutaniously.

This Zen guy har Bro Kari is a very awesome drummer lah. Tell you har...Once he came my home, play on my Kit ....wah the groove damn Solid man....he's good ....teach me some great stuffs & Kang -Hu also leh....great Bro.

haha, i just didn't see any thing i can share then, i keep quite la, this is the only thing i know, then i can share abit, ooooooooooooooooi, let's back to the rim shot topic. hahaha.
