Anyone plays slide guitar here? Is it necessary to turn your gutiar into slide tuning before you play? I mean, can you play normal chords, then do slide for a solo?
it depends on what u want to play tho. like mentioned by
hifi_killer u can use standard tuning too. there a few tunings u can use also, open E, open G, open A, etc... check Google for those tunings.
why do u need to use open tuning, well its for the ease of playing full or fragmented chords by just barring the slide on the strings. (e.g open G, just strumming the guitar unfretted, u r playing a G chord.) and soloing on single or more notes are easier too!
where do u use the slide? again, no right or wrong here. i used it on my ring finger. its the most comfortable for me. some use on their pinky, or middle, or 1st. u try... and regarding material of slide: glass, brass or steel? same thing try them all. i prefer glass, but i kept dropping and breaking them. now i use brass, which i prefer more than steel.
u need higher string gauge and higher action too. not that its impossible to use on thinner strings and lower action. just that u need to have more control pressing the slide on the strings, or else u get lots of buzzes and dead string noises.
the last thing i recommend is listen to slide greats. there's lots of them out there. i'll recommend the Allman Brothers Band (Duane Allman & Dickey Bett rules!) and Derek Trucks Band (a young slide terror there - well, he actually plays in the Allman brothers Band now.)
those are what i know and practice. and i'm not expert in this, so look out for more resources. good luck with playing slide!
