Singing with mic and without mic

I have this problem. When i sing without mic i can handle my vocal well as in i feel very comfortable just singing my way in the song. But when i went jamming with a band, I totally gone off key and my vox get very stressed up and painful. I tried cooling down abit and went on but during the chorus i went off key again. is it because i'm too nervous or i just couldn't handle singing infront of a mic?

not a matter of confidence the band that u jam with might be playing the song in a key which way beyond yr vocal range that's why either that or u need to increase the volume control of yr mike maybe try increasing the master volume and add a lil efx and bass(low) think that might do the trick

hmmm... but without the mic the song is within my range.. i'll try again on the mic voume.. =) thanks!

it seems like you can't hear yourself clearly.

what some people do is cover one ear with one hand to focus. try out, see if it works.

Maybe you can record your jamming session. Many mp3 players have built in mic recording feature which is quite handy for this.

If you want, you can ask your band mates to play one set without vox, and another set with vox. So you can make a comparison when you go back home. Also you can practise at home too, to your pre-recorded minus one track.

You can also compare it to actual original song to find out if the key is right. One good thing is that this way you can jam by yourself at home too.

One last thing that many unseasoned vox have is poor mic holding discipline. Imagine the mic is an ice cream, and when your voice comes out, it's like you are licking on it kind of distance. The further you hold your mic, the less it picks up your voice, you have to strain more and sing louder. So you get tired easy.

maybe the band's out of tune. lol.
happens to me.. think that's simply because i look for the other instruments pitches to check on mine.. so if they go out of tune.. or play the wrong pitch.. i get confused.

that covering the ear to check your pitch technique's useful. cos the most likely problem is you not being able to hear yourself..
especially these days where bands like to blast their instruments out during a jam, and the poor vocalist has to ride his/her voice over it

hmmm... maybe true.. cause i audition for this band and i'm suppose to sing evanescence's songs for it. i have no problem handling the song without the mic.. But when i sing with the band i seem to go really OFF during the chorus. thats why i was wondering is it the way i hold the mic or izzit i cant really hear myself or what.. LOL

similar phenomenom, when singing along to a cd, its like so easy, then when the band starts playing, your body automatically acknowledges that the band is louder, and there goes your range and projection, even onto the mic

increase mic level, sing further from the mic to adjust volume from too loud to listenable vocals. and dont jam at a cheap skate jamming studio, unless u know sound tweaking very well

i think we vocalists sometimes find it hard to hear ourselves and therefore strain when we sing during jamming..bcoz ur vocals get drowned out in the small rooms (n yes in the jamming rooms with poor acoustics). Everybody's voice has a optimal range and amplitude. At a certain key u can sing louder, at others you haf to sing softer to remain in key and to create whatever edge or sweet smooth tone u want to create. Thus, try and stand by the way u sing without a mic when ur using a mic. Chances are when u actually do perform the song, ur going to sound good..unless the place ur performing is actualli like the same poor jamming room u mite have been using or a result of poor mixing.
