hi guys.
i personally used protools for a couple of school based projects before.
at the most basic level, protools provides a very user-friendly platform for anyone. if you are looking at basic home recording, i think there are other softwares out there that can match protools in terms of quality and user-friendliness, such as acid pro by sony and audicity (its a free software). and i would say their interface is very similar to protools as well (the layered tracks, drag and drop segments, basic edit kinda tools).
please note that the above information is based on my superficial interactions with these softwares.
however, its the various/numberous functions of protools that makes it one of the most powerful recording software in the industry today. mediacorp radio and record labels uses it, even steve vai is full of praise for protools. below is a video of steve vai demostrating the beat detective function of protools.

so my point would be. yes, protools is user-friendly, its got a wide array of functions... but its expensive too (i think so la, not really sure about the price).
so whether to get protools anot really depend on the purpose of your recording. do you just want to mix your band's music? and even if you got the software, do you have the other necessary equipments to support this software?
if you are not really going hardcore to get professional recording. i think you can consider other softwares first. some got trial version, demo version, they also offer pretty decent stuff.
once again, i am just sharing my experiences. probably got lotsa mistakes in my words, i think.
