Signing on for Singapore Police Force?

Although I will only be going to NS in about 2 years time , I've been considering signing on for the Singapore Police Force even before I get enlisted for a number of reasons :

1) I loved to watch "Triple Nine" on channel 5 when I was a kid and would get mesmorised whenever those CID cops would go and bust a criminal hideout and shout , "CID!!!! FREEZE!!!!".

2) I took a module on Civil Law during my last semester in poly and that kinda spurred my interest in the topic of Law through reading up on the various case studies and the application of the various principles of law in the case studies.

3) Although NS police is "famous" for their slack BMT training but I'm NOT really interested in that but rather I feel that in the police , you are trained with "the real thing". You will deal with real life cases in your course of training instead of firing into blank spaces with an M18 rifle in the army and pretending that you're actually firing at an enemy during outfield training.

In the army you are waiting for a war to happen while in the police , everyday is like a war to you. Am I right to assume that?

I know that there is a bond by the SPF for pre enlistees who intend to pursue an NS career in the SPF. The bond consist of 2 years NS and a 2-3 year bond. I'm considering this bond before I actually get called up for NS.

So basically in all , I feel that doing NS in the SPF would be more meaninful and worthwhile than doing NS in the SAF because like I've said it before , in the SPF you are trained with "the real thing" but of course with the "real thing" comes great challenge....

Since most NS threads here often talk about the SAF , I hope you SOFTies can shed some light on what's it like doing your NS in the SPF.

Cheers

My friend just went in ... He say shiok ah ... Like 3 hr lunch breaks, after 7 free etc .... The cck new police academy ... i would prefer to go police over army .. i think army is too much politics for me. Plus the singapore army is not a good place for a practicing muslim like me to go to. many reasons why.

not a bad place to end up in NS ... but to sign on, i think you should think twice. Dun get inspired just because of some media influence ... coz what you see on TV is never what actually happens. Before you get to the "action", 90 percent of the time is spent doing administration paper work, mundane patrols and canteen breaks. You may find it meaningful doing it for NS ... but to do it extentively for a bond of 6 years is a different story.

I'm not discouraging you from Signing on ... but my advice is if you do so, do it for the right reason. Some reasons that ppl sign on ... Job stability, avoiding desk job, good incentives (welfare), good bonus, patrotism. Out of these, job stability is always the most popular ... dun tell me about patrotism ... see if you stil have that after 3 mundane years in the force.

You have to serve a bond of 5 years actually, 2 years as NS and 3 years to cover the remaining NS time.

Meaning:

1 day full-time Police Officer equivalent to 2 days National Service. Hence the 5 years.

Great thing is, free car licence, great incentives etc.

However, not many got through cos they have to go through alot of consideration. Those with at least diploma usually gets through the second stage.

Those with only O levels can get through the first stage of selection but after that it would be tough unless everyone there who signs up only have O level.

I did sign up when i was 17 turning 18, got through the first round with O levels, but after that no more reply after the assesment.

Those with life records very little chance to get through too.

When you apply online, that's the first stage.
If they choose you, they will send you a letter and ask you to come down to cantonment at toa payoh i think.

There, they will take some psychological test. Each one of you will go to private rooms at different turns and they will plug in some needles, sort of like acupunture and they will like drain some blood and ask u qns. Kinda like a lie detector test but only much painful. Actually not that painful.

Then after that there will be a beautifuly tight clad women police officer that will come in. If you show some horny feelings then you are out cos they officers don't want any make out sessions during police patrols.

Ok i'm kidding. In the first interview, you have to answer like 50 qns or so within a time frame. It test you on sequences and logic.

Then they will check you for tattoos, do some colour blind tests, take hgt, wgt, something like your NS medical check up.

It's a short session, around 2 hours or so dpends on how many turn up. the lesser the ppl, the faster it be.

Then you go home, and if you are selected for the next round they will send you a letter for the next final interview which would probably include physical assesment.

If you are not selected, they will send you a letter telling you what an unqualified pussy you are. Ok kidding, only that it will be in better terms.

i like ure views on ns police. not like typical reactions like," wah police ah, so heng ah.... bmt so rileks, bla bla bla" wat they do not realize is the fact that frontline officers deal with everyday situations. mundane desk jobs, writing logs here and there. dealing with inconsiderate/disrespectful members of public.
but between all these, u do have perks. by perks, i mean being behind the police line. but dun get me wrong, but the first time u do anything as a uniformed officer. it juz feels different. licenses are not an automatic thingy. cos certain batches of regulars dun get sent for driving lessons. thus no license when they POP (not sure abt now tho) and if ure gonna make this job as your ricebowl, do think ahead if it suits u. the pressure can really get to u sometimes. (due to the inconsiderate/disrespectful members of public again, lodging a complaint against officers over trivial things) and its really dangerous if u bring your outside life problems to work, cos ure armed with a revolver and 10 bullets. do take dat into account as well.

the best advice is ask ard if u have frens in the SPF, to see wats it like. had a blast serving my NS as a NPCO. i would have signed on if it wasnt for the fact that the public sees us as "customer service officers in police uniforms"

i think there are 3 rounds of interviews. cantonment is not at toa payoh. not sure where the interviews are held, but police cantonment complex (PCC) is at chinatown/outram. opposite outram MRT

P/S to all regulars, current or ex pns officers, im juz stating my views. dun take it too seriously, its getting late and im in dire need of fourty winks
zzzzzzzzzzz

I'm going to apply for SO position after I get my degree. Hope I can successfully get into the C-Course lah, if not no choice start out as JO lor.

Although I love the uniform to death, my goal is to join either SIS, SSB or Anti-Vice (All CID branches) as an IO. Gambling Suppression doesn't sound that bad either...There are some places in my neighbourhood I suspect to be illegal gambling dens..

Policework has always been more exciting than being in the Army, because crimes happen on a more frequent scale than wars (obviously right?)

I joined the NPCC in secondary school because I was fuelled by an interest to be "Part of the SPF before joining the SPF". Through a certain 'Crime Prevention Ambassador' course I went through in Sec 3 organized by Bedok North NPC, I got to know many officers from the NPC, an SI (now SSI), a S/Sgt (Now SSS), and a few SGTs and CPLs. not sure who are the SCs among the bunch though. The Police Knowledge course I went through in Sec 3 got me real interested in legal issues and the Penal Code, much to an extent I placed the Singapore Statutes Online site (http://statutes.agc.gov.sg/) No.1 on my Firefox bookmark list.

Well, maybe I'll be a Cadet Inspector in June. I don't know. We'll see. Maybe.

Ah yes can I clarify some details with the SCs or regulars lurking around here..

1) I heard that TRACOM (now HTA) bans the seasoning of the peaked cap. Why is this so? It makes you look Mario you know.
2) How does the system of rank-and-file promotion go about? How are JOs with degree selected to go through C-Course? What are the selection criteria?

Before signing up for anything always think carefully. Can you forsee urself doin the same job for the next ten years? Cos I have friends who signed on for the army, even though their contract is only 5 years, they continued to signed on after the contract ended. They hated their jobs but continued to sign on cos they have gone into "a comfort zone" and do not want to get out into society and start from scratch again. So best is ensure that you really have a passion for this job.

I have a friend who signed on for the police. In his first few years, he was patrolling in a neighbourhood police post, and its pretty boring stuff, not as glamorous as you think it is. As for training wise, my friend who had went through military bmt b4 signing on for police, say that it is more slack as compared to the military, but u have to study alot of law stuff which he find boring.

Hey DoubleBlade sorry to borrow your thread for a while.

Just some questions regarding the Police Force. So let's say I've deferred myself from NS now, cause I'm studying currently. When the time comes for NS, I can go to police for interview or something? And if I get so called rejected, I'll be posted to Army instead?

Aiyo.. Why everybody so keen on signing on Police? I now suff'ring in hell @ SOC & the jobs can be quite sh*tty.

If you get posted to a good unit & a good dept, chances are your workload & promotions will be damn shiok. If you posted to a wrong supervisor, he/she will screw you up, down, left & right & make you a scapegoat.

I beckon ya'll to think twice. Don't sign on bec of the $, but rather for the passion.

Kwerty,

From what i hear, If u defer your police now, they cant confim that you get police again in your next callup. Even though you go for interview, its not 100% that u can get police again.

Jr-V: I deferred from CMPB, is that army or police? I got a letter saying I must turn up for army... But I'm currently studying so i went down defer.

Do deferring for NS = both army AND police?
