Signature stuffs

I get to do some guitar research recentlyas I'm shopping around for some guitar stuffs. It brought my attention to people's obsession with signature stuffs. I realised many people are obsessed with signature stuffs and think they're always better than regular guitar stuffs which is not always true. It may be true for some case, but some of the artist signature stuffs, (I shall not named any here), the artist aren't even using it themselves!Maybe I'm a player who goes for the playability of an instrument, and I do understand the value of collecting an instrument which carried an artist's name. After blabbering for so long,my question is,isn't Zakk Wylde a regular joe playing a les paul equipped with regular EMG 81s and 85 pickups before he was famous? And Slash record Appetite For Destruction with a Les Paul copy equipped with regular Alnico II Pro Humbuckers. My thoughts are why are so many ppl obsessed with signature stuffs that make them so unoriginal? Please feel free to share your opinions with me.

I apologise for the influency of my msg, it was written in a rush, I shall edit it again so that people will understand what I'm writting bout.

how you define "so many ppl obsessed with signature stuffs"? is it like 4 in 10? or 8 in 10?

he does have a very strong point though, why are we all buying equipment similar to our idols, or at least what our idols endorse

but his point is that ppl are buying more signature guitar then normal guitar.
is tat really true?
i mean when u say ppl are buying things that our idol endorsed by all means in wat way?
arent most guitar build almost the same?to be played?

i have a marcus miller signature bass. it has:

abalone block inlays
vintage pickups (which a pretty good)
a decent pre-amp
an upgraded bridge

so far, i've noticed that

1) the tone is pretty damn good and
2) the playability is excellent, it's got the thinnest jazz neck i've ever felt and really good sustain.

marcus miller is still playing his original bass--which this bass is based off, only that the preamp on his is modified by roger sadowsky. i think that the signature on the headstock doesn't matter. if someone *only* plays signature stuff, that could be a problem, sure, but I haven't run across someone like that yet.

oh, and i don't play marcus miller, either. i slap, sure, and he's one of my influences, but i don't think that just because i have a bass with his signature on it will make me a better bassist than other people with normal '62 jazz basses.

on another note, my next purchase will be a '57 pbass, without a signature on the headstock.

then please show us the research =p =x

of course if this was a survey conducted via word-of-mouth then i can't expect you to show us la...

*edit:*

But yes, I am aware that having a signature on the headstock can boost the 'glam' factor of the instrument to those who play them. So while I agree that there are people who like signature stuff, I don't think that they're all "OMG" when a signature guitar/bass/pedal comes out. I'm speaking from the perspective of a bassist here, of course, so I can't say much about the Zakk Wylde fanatics... I'm pretty sure the MXR Zakk Wylde pedal isn't al that special, though.

*edit 2:*

Okay... look at the P-Nut signature bass. How is that not visual orgasm if you like Warwicks :p

When a guitar is being endorsed and used by mega guitar-gods, there is a certain measure of quality that is ensured.
Satriani would not fancy his very name on a shitty guitar/amp, yes?
And look at the JSX, it is tailor-made for Satriani, and he uses it. His fans who wants to reproduce his sound would go for it.
That's signature stuff for you.

if you buy the REAL signature instrument, exactly the one the artistse uses, then yes its gonna be one high quality axe.

take for example Gibson's Slash signature or ESP Hanneman's signature. Both are custom shop axes, no doubt both are very high quality axes too. I wouldnt jump straight to buy a signature instrument tho. But they may be tailored more for the artists, that in some cases, may be more of a playing hindrance for us. (take the JS for example. its got one big heel compared to the more sleeker JEM)

I personally endorses my 2 Ibanez axes & they are my very own signature models

Anybody wants? lololol...

I bought a gloss black LP with gold hardware and trim so i could have a smiliar guitar to hetfields st anger axe with the iron cross and racing stripe.

It's only a craftsman but i still love it.

erm... .actualy this doesnt hold true for alot of things...

for example.

i own two signature pieces of gear. One is my 5150 previously endorsed by van halen. Another is a musicman luke , of the great steve lukather.

both of these pieces i had tried extensively and compared with other pieces of standard production with no artist name on it. and it beat them hands down. Ofcourse this is for my tastes and preferences... but still ... i didnt buy it for the artist. i still cant play eruption and i still dont really listen to toto that much.

i've got a epiphone slash signature, i must say that it doesnt work like magic and give u the tone that slash has, but i bought it cos its his signature model...and im a fan of him...hehe...:p

Preferably get a signature that's not in a solid colour finish so you can evaluate the wood used. I've seen my boss at the guitar store where I work strip the paint off a JS1000 (the Satch signature), some customer wanted a different paint job. We were horrified! They were using decaying wood and tons of wood-filler. You can't see the true condition of the wood because of the flashy paint job!

What was very disturbing was that it was a JS1000, a high-end model of the JS range.....I'm hoping it's not a trend these rich guitar companies are following, making poor grade guitars under the guise of "signature" models....

wah. this topic is good lah. open ended. sure no end to it one.

i think sometimes some signature stuff have a particular design and can't get it if it's not signature. so no choice if you like the design.
