Surviving Beijing tells the story of a group of Malaysian underground musicians' quest for recognition in a foreign land.
The film depicts how the members of Malaysian bands, Chong Yang and Mo Xuan, tried to blend into the Beijing underground scene by living illegally in the Rockers' village, seeking performance opportunities in shabby pubs and bars, struggling to make an impression while adapting to the alien environment. The film is dedicated to "Huang Huo" comrades, who were the pioneers of Malaysian Chinese independent music.
For one month, the band stayed at Rockers Village in the outskirts of Beijing where underground musicians lived like farmers and dedicated themselves to their socio-political songs. The Malaysians tried to blend in, looking for gigs in pubs and bars, performing illegally without license, all the while desperate to make an impression and at the same time adapt to the alien environment. The movie also looks at how this devastating "baptism of fire" became a seminal point in the development of the Malaysian Chinese independent music scene.
