I'm considering buying a microphone, and am looking at the SM58, Q7 and other similar microphones.

Does anyone have some experiences they would like to share that could help me decide which one to get?

Thanks!

Hi Btherl,

Seems like you're looking for a microphone for live use?
Basically two main things to consider at this stage:
1) Type of microphone (dynamic? condensor? ribbon? etc.. both SM58 and Q7 are dynamics)
2) Polar Pattern (how, where the mic picks up it's sound)

SM58 has a cardioid polar pattern, whereas Q7 has supercardioid (picks up less sound from the sides, but a little bit from the rear-end). You can't really go wrong with the SM58, but take a look at the Shure Beta58A as well - very nice frequency response (more detailed sound than the SM58 - and also hotter level before feedback). Beta58A is slightly pricier than the SM58, but it's worth the extra bit.

I haven't tried the Q7 before, but do have a look at microphone types online. There's loads to say about microphones, but it really boils down to your application and budget.

Again, you can't go wrong with the SM58 heh trusted brand lah. Cheers, good luck.

By lucky coincidence, one of my friends lent me an SM58 for an extended period. I can see why singers like it .. it has a very warm sound compared to the karaoke mics I have.

i have a brand new Audix OM5 to let go. read up about it. its a great alternative and it looks much nicer n does not feel like a hammer.. 96714402 if you keen comes with pouch in box.

I'm looking for people to share their experiences, either live or recording. Thanks for all your comments so far!

I'm no longer keen to buy a mic now as I happened upon a SM58 by chance. I'm going to use that for a while then try comparing to some other mics.

For live :

on 2 accounts I once bought a sennheiser e845 (I think) for the vocalist (bday gift) vs the live mic on stage an SM58. it was clearer.

recently sallys had a gig, music garage uses SM58, but I bought along my Audix i5 and the pickup was alot better than the 58.

so it's not that 58 sucks, just that different mics react differently to different vocals and live situation. 58's a good mic too (quite cheap)

for recording :

for clear recording you might wanna use those large diaphgram condenser vocal mics. but for rock vocals/screamo/louder singing , a dynamic mic will do well too, infact at times better.

Thanks for that! I've read a lot of comments online saying that the SM58 is not as good as modern mics, but it's always good to hear more :)

Hey! I'm also searching for a good mic for live performances too!
Would like to share any knowledge that you guys know about.
Well i'm doing screaming and growling(inhale) vocals.
And i dont have a clue of getting which mic.

I heard low impendence mic is better. Minimises unwanted distortions and stuff.

So shure SM58, Beta Sm58A or Q7?
I think q7 is good i read the review.

have been using the shure sm58a beta for years...
quite a hefty price when i bought it but it sure is worth it... : )

Sennheiser has also recently introduced the e835 which has a cardioid pick-up pattern. I've heard that it's similar to the sm58 but better in terms of quality of built due to its made in German origin as compared to Shure's made in China..

Price wise, both are quite close. The last I checked, Luther Music works carries them

Currently I'm using Sennheiser's e835 S and sekaku BK-211. i guess most of you here haven't heard of sekaku loll but if you did then its great. it's a Dynamic mic with high treble. You can take a look here http://www.kebel.cn/html/detail/Pro40431.html it's kind of rare to find sekaku's mic online.

Btw Senniheiser e835 is great. I personally think that it brings out my vocals.
