hey...was juz wondering, shud ppl whose skills not tt fantastic start learning to play those kinda lead stuff?
was playing those scales n my fren say i shud improve on my strumming n etc. b4 playing those kinda stuff...

maybe you should start out with the basic chords. it's up to you which part you wanna develop on. i have known of people who are reaal good at lead but cant really strum. hahaha. so yeah.. it's up to you. :D that's what i think though.

how do we run when we can't walk yet?
pretty cliched analogy but i guess it holds up in pretty much everything we do.

but you know, get those basic stuff down pat. and.. guitar should not be looked upon as a lead/rhythm instrument.. imho.

Thing is to not jump straight to the complicated stuff where it's easy to make mistakes without guidance. Bad habits are very bothersome to kick. With the basic stuff you're less likely to go wrong. Agree with nunob and do try to incorporate your own tone eg. vary the strength of the strum/picking at different points of a song and just go with the flow so you won't sound monotonous! haha anyway just my 2 cents :p

IMO beginners should learn how to play the guitar. learn everything, don't limit your experience to just a certain aspect of playing.

Basic ting is to get ur basic foundation right. No use trying to be a shredder if u cant even strum. Basic chords, plucking and strumming will help u alot to figure your leads so dat it makes sense lie y there r major and minor scales.

There a lots of theory ans practical things to learn in the basic level....
Like chord changing, barre chords, different intervals of chords, triads, fingerpicking n many more.

U dont want be a shredder and u cant even play the guitar basic parts.

Wen i was learning guitar back den....i too wana be a fast shredder....I was repriminded by my mentor few times. And everytime I hv to learn back my basic....i almost wana give up music........Thankfully....his guidance n my patience to get the basic right pays off.......at least im somewhere....

i found chords a bore too, only to find out that there were more other than themajors and minors like augmented, dim, ninth, seventh and more.. if you at least know all the majors and minors and can change smoothly between chords, then i wld say move on to playing scales.. go slow.. your friends said you cant strum properly? what did he mean by that?

then u should move on to the more "chim" aspects. its boring if u play just chords, u wanna develop urself as a musician, so don't limit urself to chords. find a guitar hero and learn his solos, maybe?

+1 while learning chords, maybe learn songs as well.. from your favourite bands or your guitar hero.. definitely help with your boredom..

we normally play gospel songs..n have to form our own way of playing it(make our own strumming patterns,etc...the chords we wud find at some websites...)
wat he meant was, when changing chords,my strumming tends to go 'not smooth' but yesterdae i played again n he said it was not bad...

i been listening to alot of steve vai n g3 lately...but these are difficult to play...n also, the tabs at those websites normally dont tell wat those notes are..so in a way,i dont learn anything...

any1 else to recommend other than g3?

Prince once said that you can't play lead if you have no rhythm, and that too many people try to solo before they can hold down a groove.Prince is a solid guitar player so I respect his words. Learn chord playing and rhythm first, it is the basics to understanding what you can solo in a song.

try to make ur chord changes as smooth as possible.. vai and g3? woah.. thats going very fast.. its not impossible with practice, but it takes alot of work.. i suggest you try playing something not too hard, like metallica's fade to black intro solo.. you would be more motivated to play, oppose to playing something hard and getting all frustrated in the end..

+1 to pier's post.. no groove,people wun move 8)

lol then what about bb king

Yes you need rhythm to solo. The rhythm here doesn't mean playing chords. It simply means that there's rhythm in solo.

To ans the question, I suggest you should have a knowledge of chords and arpeggios and create some solos using these arpeggios notes. Enjoy :)
