Setting up a home guitar studio

hi all~!

been having this idea for quite some time but have no means and ways of how to really go about doing it. Hope i can get some advises or pointers from experts out there.
ok this is wat i have in mind,

1)planned of getting or setting a system dedicated for editing the guitar inputs and mixing with other equipment like drum loops. i've been pondering whether a PC or a Mac is better for audio editing. in terms of better, i mean the processing speed a PC or a Mac can perform while rendering without waiting for hours just to finish a piece. how fast is fast enuff? P4? Duo Core? G5?

2)as for the inputing ways, i found out there's quite a number of ways. 1 of them would be using a firewire audio interface, connected to the PC, plugged in and start jamming. Normally these interface is bundled with a editing software. Another way is a solution from Mac, which is using their breakout box for the inputting, while using softwares like garageband or logic pro for the editing. Which u guys think is a better way?

3)for efx, i think there isn't much of a issue. A GNX3000 would most likely to do a good job. or rather, individual efx pedals will do a much better job? Im just a noob when it comes to effects so ill be so greatly appreciated if anybody would be willing to enlight me~

if in any ways, this setup sux or im doing it the wrong way... please please do let me know! lolz! don't wanna end up setting up something idiotic and not helping at all in any ways...

thanx peepz!

Think this post should be at the Sound section, anyway a lot depends on your budget. Perhaps stating how much you're willing to spend might help u decide. For instance, if you go Mac, u save money on software if you're using garageband. I haven't used a Mac enough to talk about whether its better than a PC in latency etc, but I'm using my laptop and its fast enough.

I c you're probably going the budget route, so perhaps a digital solution like a POD, guitarport or anything going direct would give you good results. If ure going pedals, high cost in getting the pedals, getting a DI-box to connect up to your Pc and and mike from the amp etc etc. Quite a lot more work and money. However, I guess if you're setting up a permanent feature, it might work out for you.

hi there,

my .2 cents worth.

am using an amd 1.8ghz with 512ram. works fine. unless you intend to use alot of plugs and softsynths etc, otherwise, for us recording guitars, its pretty simple i think. for 24 tracks with some plugs, it takes like, i dunno, 2 mins to render? i really don't think it will take hours...

for soundcard options, maybe you can consider the digidesign mbox2. comes with protools software and plugs to get you going. good preamps. little pricey, maybe about $800+. if not, wait for the tapco usb, or an m-audio firewire interface will do just fine. i believe you shouldn't have a problem here, options are plenty. or the traditional route is pci soundcard (echo miamidi perhaps) and mixer.

for guitar fx, pod, gnx etc, will do the trick nicely. and cuts the hassle of buying pedals, amp, mics etc. for me, i used the pod xt live for recording for quite awhile before i decided to switch to the micing up the amp with pedals route. there's just something about recording the amp with a mic...can't explain it. sounds nicer..to me. :)
but if you go pod xt live for e.g, very convenient. select your sound and off you go. easy. guess you have to decide. cheers

my virgin recording was done with a yamah stomp, the one that is alreayd out fo production, pretty decent! after the that i used a me-50, and now im looking at line6 toneport. anyway my me-50 and yamaha stomp wasnt really bought for recordings

hey thanx alot peeps!

after reading your replies, i've been doing some searching thru the internet. Have a look at some of line 6 products like the guitar port and the POD. Hey they're pretty straight forward! I've always tot it'll take a pro to do all these stuffs... the mbox2 look quite neat also...

wow~ alot of choices to make. guess i'll have to see my own preferences and start throwing some greens... lolz!

thanx again!

ohh, there's something other than this i'll like to ask.
Seems the Edwards E-LP-85 is rather popular in the forum eh? Notice that few fellow forumers had got this model,
