its useful... memorising scales is one of the most important part of learning to be better... but dun memorise by sight... practise everyday til u can memorise it by feel and by sound.... but do read up also... at least know the diff between scales... but i suggest u just chose any scale in a certain key... like C minor pentatonic ... and jus focus on this scale 1st....
There are 3 ways a musicians learn music. Visual, Audio and Tactile.
Visual is where you graphically "see" where the notes of your fretboard is. You can start by mapping out all the possible positions of a scale on your fretboard. Then start to memorise them .... for starters .... you might not be able to "feel" or "understand" these notes ... but just memorise them anyway .... the "meaning" to these notes will come in as you play and experience more.
Tactile is what you actually play and feel on the fretboard. Memory work is the most basic thing you must do. But it willl all boil down to nothing if you dun play it physically. So whatever you memorise .... practice, practice, practice.
Audio is hearing .... it is to identify the sound of the note that you are playing. It's hard to explain ... but it's another dimension of playing. Like when you hear a Bb in reference to a C ... you know it is a b7 .... and you know it is a C7. This will come in as you play more songs and chords. Takes a lot of time to attain ... but just press on. [/b]
That's wonderful but he's asking if it's worthwhile to memorize scales. He's not asking for different ways to learn music.
And yes, if you ever want to progress beyond looking up tabs online and learning your favorite songs, you should probably learn your scales. It's boring but you'll be able to solo and improvise which is scientifically proven to be 100x more awesome than playing along to some song.
P.S. this new thing where the message box pops up directly below the post you want to quote is pretty nifty.
lol....i like that part. but i think its not that its more awesome, it just allows u more creativity, space if u will, to do more with the song. maybe u can modify the solo to suit ur style, or if the song is too boring for u then spice it up with a few licks here and there...u know that sorta things. w/o scales u'll not be able to improvise over songs that easily (unless u've got perfect pitch, or are a genius like hendrix, he didnt learn scales)
