Hey guys, I know this got no link to music or what. But i really need to ask people's opinion. Well, this is the problem here.

Well, right now, I'm in RP first year. Doing the second sem. Well, honestly, i have no more motivation to learn and study in RP. For me, so far while im in RP, i can't get to learn much. As in i've found out that im not into RP kind of learning which is Problem based learning. I would rather have the old way or just like other school of lecturing and exams. Everyday , we do research and everyday we do presentation. So its more like we learn it ourself then show what we have learn. Most of the time, i admit, we bluff our way thru. Its more like we let our team mates to do the job. I feel, even our own team mate can affect our grades. Let say, if we are sick on one day, and we go to class feeling low and never talk much, the facilitator will say we never contribute in class discussion, that might affect our grades too. Even the facilitator mood can also affect out grades. if he/she not happy wif us, he/she might gave us lower grades. so its kinda sucks to me. Even one of my facilitator who alr resigned told me that the school system sucks and he/she told the class that our future might be ruined. He/She also told us that the reason he/she quit his/her job was because of the school system.

Then right now, i was thinking of changing school. I don't really care what course i could take at other school, as long as science course im happy with it. Anyway my L1R4 is 16 .

So now , i need to ask u guys, would i be making the right decision to change school and how can i speak to my parents so that they would understand me and go along with it???

Do Help me man , Im in DILEMMA:(

PEACE NO WAR!!! NO OFFENCE TO RP, JUST THAT I NEED TO ASK OPINION

You need self motivation dude... All the low morale of your classmates are affecting you, try to motivate yourself to study.

All i can say is, year 1 is really pretty boring...but hang in there, you will get to learn more "useful" stuffs in year 2 and 3. Its really pretty stress you know? Year 1 is indeed a complete waste of time in RP.

.

Same as you in RP year 1 ,sem 2.
I feel exactly the same way 2 bro, n honestly i dont think i learnt anything much even though you can bluff ur way thru and get a good GPA like wat i did in sem 1. Its my mistake of choosing anyways.
I would have wanted to change skool if i can aford to pay the grant in full.

i think it's never too late! switching school now is better though! tell your parents about the system and yadayada, im sure they'd understand and be supportive! plus, it's not like you're losing interest in school, you care for your grades and future so yeah, switch! switch if you hate the ssystem! come to nyp! awesome sch!

I'm from RP.year one indeed was a doof but i'm having a good time in this year 2,sem 2.as said before, year 1 was 90% a waste of time.

just hang in there, might get better year 2,thats where u start getting into your course..but if you feel it doesn't cut it,then you probably would have to make a decision.

Currently doing my year 2 in RP. I agree that the first year was a hell of a waste of time. I considered quitting last year. But year 2 you'll be going full time into your course so yeah, hang in there. I think its a bit late to change school now that you're in your second semester already. Hang in there!

year 1 is such a drag. what diploma you are doing is not related to some of your modules that you are learning currently. so yea it is a waste. even when i was in year 1 some of my facis said that the reason we all are learning this is for 'rainy days' purposes or just for some background knowledge.

and yes, we all bluff our way through. be it plagiarism or other things. it is boring doing presentation every single day. No attachment and all like other polys. but its all about your mindset. Did you chose to be in RP? Or were there other things that made you come to RP?

but its true when it comes to year 2 and 3. you will learn the main core modules for your diploma. Additional to that, you have 2 freely choosen module. Im in year 2 and doing DSES, and im also currently taking Arts Management for my freely chosen module, which is what i like.

So yea. There are pros and cons being in not only in RP, but also other polytechnics (i think. haha.)

Year 3 TP student speaking.

Dude, why waste that year? Continue to push on. I can tell you, any facilitator/lecturer/teacher/instructor who says school system sucks and just resign like that is not a good mentor IMO. My lecturers in TP that i know resigned due to politics among the staff rather than the system, so yeah.

In additional to that "mood == grades" crap. Seriously, if you think you did well, fight for your rights! Facilitator say his/her judgement final, send parent's letter in!

I can tell you, at the end, you go any tertiary, even if you dont do research during the first years which is my case(but extra research helps, honestly), second year and even in your final year projects, research and references are like clothes of your projects/assignments. Trust me, I used google/wikipedia and probably some books in the library in every single project/assignment I had, because you needed those extra references.

Good luck! =)

hey!
year 1 from SP here..
JOIN SP!
lol gt $10/hr jam studio there..lol.
ok fine lets get serious.

i got a friend from RP too.
he's in the same situation as you.
low morale, no motivation etc etc.
so he went to a counsellor in RP.
after that, somehow he managed to like studying there.
maybe you should try approaching a professional there.
i hope this helps.

CHEERS!

hey man!

in my opinion it is much easier to do well in RP and move on to universities or anywhere else with a GPA that might seem impressive. I heard that from the recent educational fair that if you get a 3.5 GPA from RP, unis will actually consider it 3.2 or 3.0 in NPs score (i'm not too sure if it's true do correct me if i'm wrong) and actually if you think about it, it is quite hard to score that kind of GPA in NP as well. I have friends who have already dropped out of their school due to their low GPAs and i have some who are really struggling very hard with their own GPA. and i'm sure you feel that in RP, it's easier to score and maintain a certain GPA as compared to other areas hence it'll be easier to gain such a GPA? i have some friends who are mad, they get 4.0s and everything and they're really smart people and i do believe that they'll move on to some good uni in time to come.

you might feel that year 1 is a waste of time, im sure most of us did. but we do learn quite alot from everything. Even at year 3, there are quite a number of stuff i learnt at year 1 i'm applying at year 3. RPs thinking is that it wants to be fair and that it wants you to learn abit of everything and get a rough feel of all the courses in RP itself (in my opinion). So actually it's quite a good thing that we've got the kind of year 1 education.

anything you might want to note. RP is actually doing quite well in its arts.
IGNITE music festival, so many arty farty performances, exhibitions, show-cases, successful on-going dance festivals and everything. I believe in time to come we'll be recognized for that and it'll be a niche for us.

AND!! my Public Relations faci always told us that she thinks its stupid of us to go around telling everyone that RP sucks, cause we're only hurting ourselves in the end if we graduate with a RP diploma. After all, we'll be the one who'll be at the job interview telling our interviewer we're from RP, and if the interviewers knows that its Rp students think RP sucks, you'll be affected won't ya? So its actually common sense to stop hurting our reputation and stuff, i mean i used to think RP was a dumb school but its actually just thinking outside the box and not conventional and it really follows " help us help you " kind of thing.

the only thing i would dislike about RP is that sometimes I feel it touches only the surface and doesn't really go in-depth in some areas and this might be bad for us in future.

besides that RP is really quite a nice school, with a nice environment, with nice things to do and stuff! okay no offence if i've said anyhting stupid and everythign!

cheers!

btw i'm year 3 this year from events management!

in my friend's case, its the OPPOSITE. he didnt have motivation to study in SP then he go RP. hahaha.

in my case, i've NEVER had motivation to study, thus i've NEVER studied. so...yeah. thats the story.

Well at least you'll get a credible diploma for slacking hahaha . I hate Exams and SP is killing me, well only around exam period that is cause other than that EVERYDAY IS A PARTY IN POLY HELL YEAH. And same O level score bro hahah

hahaha. RP is a cool school man!! espicially for people like me. And those who are lazy to study. hahaha...And also easy to score good grades if u know how to act.

I've survived 2.5 years in RP already. And to tell u the truth, what i learn today, i forget the next day. I agree that PBL is not an effective way to learn stuffs. And the grading system may be biased too. Some faci here look at how u look like. I got 1 faci who always shoot me qns and stuffs cuz of my long hair. he's an As*hole btw.

So i guess if u wanna change sch, go change now. Don't waste anymore time not learning stuffs in RP.

P.S.......I do love RP.

I am not too sure about this.
But what I heard is that RP's diploma is not really widely recognized.
Correct me if I am wrong.

So I would suggest that you transfer over to NYP or TP. (:
I do have a friend in RP, and from what I understand, it's really a waste of time.
If you have the money and motivation, go somewhere else better.
(no offence to RP, aye.)

dude, you're in year 1 sem 2, up to now it's aredi left with 1/4 before u finish year 1. Trust me, make use of that time and just chill, cabut class, dun go in class, but when year 2 kicks in, start studying.. I swear you'll miss the year 1 slack times like hell.. I believe u'r in SAS? One of my friends is in SAS, and throughout the time during breaks, i'll see him with his bag, not entering class, in the library playing XBOX, watching movies... that's how sucky it is if u think RP's wasting time (apart from that, that's how GREAT it is, if u'r stressed in other schools, u have no choice but to endure or leave, but for RP, if u'r stressed, u leave den go play XBOX, pool, sleep and last choice go home hahaha)..

i believe RP instills independent learning in their students and i, for one, really think that it's a success only if you think it's a success..

I'm in year 2 sem 2 now doing sonic arts, and i'm pretty happy with what i'm doing except one(or two) of the facis is driving me crazy.. For some of u who's in DSA Yr2Sem2, u guys sure would noe who those guys are haha but that's part of school, teachers drive u crazy..

hi karl hi alshit!
hahaha

ok 1st of all.
let me ask u smth.
Did the school owe u something?
Do any schs in singapore owe u a living?
In any of the schools, i mean any.
If u do not take that extra effort to work hard and do well.
Who would want to hire you?
U might say RP's cert is under rated.
If you have an impressive port folio, who gives a shit about the cert. I always say the school is a learning platform where you are still allowed to make mistakes and learn along the way but if you take the initiative to go all out and learn and even do your own project to build up ur own portfolio, why should u be afraid?

I have friends who are still in RP but is helping alot of media out there to do editing and post production and getting quite decently paid free lance.

I emphasize this again.
Noone owes u anything.
in this world u have to fight for yourself.
Lets say you go study in SP and i have friends dropping out of sp to come study rp cus they system there is too harsh (or they're just plain lazy).
You got an SP cert. u go out with an empty portfolio.
lets say you're doing media.
An RP student with his everyday pbl has smth nice he think he has done so he keeps inside his portfolio and he does nt leave it lying dead there but he expands on it. And dun tell me 2 yrs of your course modules u dun produce smth decent, then you deserve a tight slap.
Compare with other schools cert with no port folio. who would u hire?

simple as that.
dun take it for granted that u have a cert from a gd sch will get you anywhere.
A cert is just a passport like some employers demand minimum is a diploma but what they see in you is what you do. YOUR PORT FOLIO.

ok done =)
have fun in rp.

actually ar.. year 1 u shud make full use of the easiness of the modules to get high GPAs u know. cos especially if u are in difficult courses, year 2 and 3 might get difficult, and the high GPA u attained in year 1 will definitely help in giving space to breathe. want to cabut year 1 modules at least cabut only some difficult problems where u confirm cannot get grade that day.
