In times of recession, money-planning is important~ I planning to get an entry-level drumkit soon due to the DTXplorer not providing me what I desire sound-wise (I still love it though :D)

Although it sounds sensitive, , how much of the blood and sweat (maybe of your parents for some) have you sacrificed for drumming? :)

So far I myself have spent $1.5k on my DTXplorer, four pair of zildjian sticks, a stick bag and a set of brandless cymbals, around $1.5-$1.8k on lessons at Yamaha since I joined last Feb. More to come!

How about you guys? I'm sure this can be a nice guide on the expenditure for new drummers like myself who wanna be pro like their idols.

i spent too much that i do not wish to count. but the satisfaction derived is worth the money spent! so yea. drum lessons suck the bloody out of you

Ive spent about 3k+ on my basic set, another 3k+ on the cymbal add ons / hardware, about 700 on my double pedals, 200 on drumsticks.

Ive played for about 3-4 years but have only started lessons for about half a year so far, so i think i probably spent less than 1k on lessons or so.

In total would be about add up to about 8k i guess. Thats just a rough estimate though.. not taking into account depreciation, wear and tear etc etc.

I don't know man... I personally think that one can't put actual figures on such expenditure. Gear like cymbals are like lifetime investments (if they are well taken care of). Besides, as you play the drums more, you will discover new sounds and ideas that you would like to explore, hence more gear purchases. It is endless. Heck, I can't even remember the price of my first cymbal purchase (a cheap Sabian Pro Sonix splash) cost! lol

But it is true that in such times of recession, we should all watch what we spend on. Especially those who are using parents' money to buy gear (no offence). Only spend on what you can afford.

@mel80: As title: Roughly. Mine isn't actual figures too. :D I don't really get what you mean can't put actual figures, maybe the exchange between the money and the satisfaction? I do agree. My motive for this thread is to at least let the beginner knows how much they will be spending, since I do know a few friends who spent quite abit of money on instruments and gave up after awhile. Cheers!

I know of guys who play on a pcs of "junk" kit and sounds like a monster. While I also know of guys who spend >$10K on a fancy drum kit and cant play shit. It is always easy for find excuses for not practising enough and the common thing to do is to blame in on the instrument.

Let me give you some examples.

Neil Peart once commented (during the burning for buddy recording) that Steve Gadd drums setup and tuning sound horrible when he play it, but when Steve goes behind the kit, it sounds totally different and awesome.

Many bassists trying to imitate Marcus Miller's bass sounds by buying his signature bass and rig. And as it turn out, the Marcus Miller's bass sound actually comes from a less than perfect Fender bass guitar which his mum bought for him when he was young and his signature sound doesnt come not from the bass, but his approach to play the crappy bass.

Yes, bro Quattro have raised a very good point raised that everybody must/should have already known. But I think you misintrepreted my intentions for this thread. Its not about getting good, expensive gears or not, but rather how much in total have been spent in general as a guide.

After all, its the user that matters, not the equipment.

Cheers! :D
