Rolling

I realised my first major problem after 2 months of playing. Im having difficulty to roll around the set. I found out about my problem when I was playing the solo for Jesus Of Suburbia

Any exercises that can help me with my problem

When I'm playing, my sticks may hit the rims of the drums instead of the center, and I can't do solos properly. Anyone has any solution to my problem, or teach me in person?

I don't take lesson as parents are not supportive of me drumming.

I had this problem last time too. The only way to solve it is to practise. Start by doing simple 2 strokes on each toms at a very slow speed, then slowly progress by increasing ur tempo. After you can do a roll of 2 strokes on each tom around the kit at a fast tempo, change to 4 strokes on each tom and start with a slow to fast tempo again. However, when you are practising, make sure you hit the centre of the tom and make sure every hit is consistent. Good luck!

There can be many reasons for your problem. It could be your posture, the positioning of your toms, your grip, your strokes or even the angle which you hold your sticks.

I'm guessing that you're hitting on the rims because of your posture, angle of sticks and possibly your tom angles too. It's a little hard to pin point what's wrong for this without any visual aid (pics etc).

Try looking at your posture first. Are you slouching? Always sit straight. Check your grip and the angle you hold your sticks. Are the sticks in each others' way? Try to maintain a V shape between your sticks when you play, even when you move around the kit. Lastly, check your tom angles. Are the rims too up high, hence causing you to hit the rims?

And like ceing said, always start slow. Get the motion right before increasing the tempo of your rolls.

Hope this helps a little. :)

my parents initially didn't approve of me drumming either, until we my band recorded a jam session and showed them.
but they still won't let me get a drumset though.

anyway, i had that problem too. one way is to keep practising. you'll get it right with enough practise. yea start out slow. no need to rush. rushing can make a song sound like dung.
it's ok to start out slow cos then you'll build up your rhythm. drummers need to be in tempo. they lead the others in trms of beats and tempo.
i dunno if this makes sense to you. i'm not sure of the correct words and phrases.

but do keep in mind that you can achieve anything with practice. it takes effort and time to reach perfection

well like what mel said, theres many factors that may be affecting the way u hit the toms....

my toms mostly are flat for the floors and for the racks are slightly angled.. i noticed many cats out there as they go fast, their hands tend to roll with the french timpany grip. IE, the sticks are paralell and not angled...

the late jeff porcaro made a video which i watched and he also explained that he uses the french timpany when rolling fast with the toms or getting around the kit so to speak...

well there are many methods and best is u experiment with all and try which suits u best. there's no only one method IE, angled stick/parallel, try experimenting yeap...

hope this helps.

Thanks guys

I don't its my toms setup. They're about 45 degree from my floor tom/ I'm guessing that its bad sticks habits, plus weak left hand and nervous that is causing my problem.

I tend to hold my sticks parallel to each other. Need to correct that habit =)

woohoos jesus of suburbia one of the first songs i learnt! one of my fave too in the beginning =P
maybe u shld adjust ur tom positions?
at my kit is almost impossible to hit the rims.
do the solo slow and increase speed, dont do a roll at the beginning, do a six stroke =)
rolling does'nt come easily and it should'nt be rushed
i saw ppl who force themselves to roll right at the beginning of learning percussion and end up having bad posture/grip and of course bad sound
hope it helps.
Im a tre cool fan too dude!

edit:
oh and i just rmb alexandrax(dont rmb his name) or smth on youtube got a slow mo version of the solo.
i think its not very accurate but check it out la..
tre rolls with one hand(both hands roll on a tom each) at one part

Haha thanks dude. I think im forcing my rolls too much. But its getting more comfortable to roll now.

Yeah I use his vids for reference as well. Great drummer isn't he? He keep playing and he has a chance of becoming a world class drummer as well. He simply confident and stunning

haha sorry bro but i dont like his drumming?
hehe its probably because he plays green day and i tend to compare him with tre who is so much better bah.
tre's is much more professional?
sorry its just my opinion.
What I like most about tre is his entertainment level (smth like visual effects)
i dont usually like drummers who sit there give a stern face and drum like a machine thruout a concert..
Tre is just very different i guess.
okay i'm very off topic
