When you state the Remo Ambassador is 10ply as above, it gave me a shock as I dont think anything 10ply can resonate ;)

Did you mean coated 1-ply BUT 10-mil instead ?

I am a big fan of the coated Ambassadors and Emperors as they are widely used as the recording standard - BUT - that is only my personal opinion.

A quick check reveals that Gavin Harrison (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Harrison) uses the following on his drums:

Toms: (8", 10", 12", 14",16") Coated Emperors - batter, Clear Ambassadors - resonant
Bass Drum: (22") Powerstroke 3 Clear- batter,Standard Sonor Head - resonant
Snares (14") Coated Controlled Sound or Coated Pinstripe - batter, Hazy Ambassador - resonant\

That should answer your question.
