Recording Help

Okay so I would like to start uploading my cover videos on youtube and I would like to know everything about recording. Yes, just about everything, I know nuts. Oh btw, just guitar recording no vocals. I've tried using a normal videocam and it sucks, or maybe its because my videocam sucks.
So I've heard about the POD 2.0 and POD Studio GX, do I just plug my guitar to the POD and my POD to the computer and I can start recording already? Because that is whats stated on the website 'Plug in and go' and what about the the part where they can see me playing, do I have to use my webcam? I'd really appreciate it if anyone can help.

hi razorback , yeah if you're getting line6 pod, it's a "USB audio interface" (soundcard) , so irregardless of what soundcard is on your pc/mac,

your guitar > line6 pod > usb > pc/daw

record it.

then while you're recording, film yourself with vidcam

take the audio of the recording and sync it manually with the videocam

and youtubewhore yourself lol.

theunknown : Thanks for the link.

blueprintstudio : Thanks for the awesome thread you made.

So I don't need a mic right and the POD acts as my preamp and soundcard right? Because it was stated in your thread '' vocals/instrument > mic > preamp > soundcard > USB/Firewire/PCI > PC > DAW ''. So if I'm right I just have to buy a POD and the Software right?
And which is better for recording purposes alone, the POD 2.0 or the Studio GX? because im on a tight budget somewhere around 250 on everything I need to record.

Sorry for being such a noob, just want to clear things up.

the only thing you would need to be sorry about is to be an ignorant noob who doesn't want to learn. so all's good.

yes depending on which version of the line6 pod , it's recommended that you check it out at citymusic (they have onsite demos) . anyway you shouldn't be looking at the pod 2.0 because it's just a guitar processor without an "audio interface", if you're using it for recording you should be looking at this section
http://line6.com/products/recording/

pod studio gx - seems the most "budget friendly" , purely for guitars
ux1 - has a mic pre for you in case you consider miking the amp or record vocals, but if i'm not wrong it doesn't have phantom power, which means you cannot use condenser mics.
ux2 - I recall has phantom power and 2 xlr inputs .

the other thing is , do you only wanna do it at home? or on the go? cos I see there're
http://line6.com/backtrack/seeitwork.html
or formerly I was using zoom h4, now there's zoom h4n (but breaks your budget)
so with a vidcam + something that records on the go, you could do it at your friend's place etc. consider your options see which one fits your budget / situation / future upgradability.

as for the software do check with your purchase ,usually they throw in a free DAW like cubase LE or something. if not you have to use audacity or cockos reaper or something.

Okay, so now I know I cant record with a POD 2.0. And I'll be recording at home only, so is the Studio GX fine for decent recording or should I go with the the UX1? And I'm sure both of them have a free software include right - the POD Farm?

And If i go with the UX1 I can connect a mic to it for miking my amp if I want to right?

Anyway, I'm not in a band and I don'y think I'm going to be in one anytime soon. So all I need is a basic guitar recording setup so I can understand the basics of recording before I move on to more expensive and better setups for recording. By that time comes i'll be in a band already so everything should fall nicely in place.

Thanks for you help, I really appreciate it.

if you're sure you're only going to record guitars ONLY, then studio gx would be ideal.
ux1 has 1 mic pre 0 phantom power
ux2 has 2 mic pre + phantom power.

from what I see on the site, yes it comes with pod farm just remember to enquire again.

and yes you can connect a DYNAMIC mic (like sm57) to the UX2.

do hit youtube for such recording guitar/video tutorials. that's the place to learn stuff visually these days heheh

Hmm, I'm counfused, so I can't connect a dynamic mic like the SM57 to the POD Studio UX1 because it has 0 Phantom Power? Then why are people afraid to run a SM57 mic if the Power Phantom is on?

Question
I have an SM57 and an Audio Technica microphone that requires phantom power, and I'm wondering if I run my phantom power through the SM57 if any damage will come from it?
Answer
The SM57 is a dynamic microphone. A professional, balanced, dynamic microphone will not be damaged by phantom power. It will "ignore" it.

I took this from the FAQ of Shure website.

it will be much easier to record the audio using line6. i'm using the toneport ux2. works very well and easy.
as for the video/camera, you have two options:
1. record using a real camera. as in digital cameras or handycam. then import the video and synchronize with the audio.
2. using webcam. this one is easier than using a camera. because the size is smaller and easier to edit. however, choose a very good webcam please. i've experienced that using a cheap webcam (even some expensive one) generates lag in the video. If you want to use webcam, i would recommend to buy a macbook. the webcam is almost zero lag. :D

just look at my youtube for example. :P

ok confusecious, , yes you can connect a dynamic mic to ANYTHING. you can't connect a condenser mic to a preamp with NO phantom power because it needs. so UX1 no phantom power no condenser, but can handle dynamic.

nowadays the modern dynamic mics can handle phantompower rejection. I think in the olden days there are cases where dynamic mics blew. but in my 8 years. nope.

what glowbox said is right, it is easier to record DI via line6 because in the earlier days (actually now also have) , people who are starting out spend literally hours, days, months to years to finally get the hang of miking the guitar amp. and get it mixed right. if really you were just planning to be a bedroom demo thingy, why spend all your creativity energy on audio? haha. this is why "you do this (musician), and I do that (audio)". i don't play a single instrument at all.

mr happy (dickhead): sony vegas that came with my sony handycam. then again there're many free software out there like avidemux etc , check www.videohelp.com , my favourite site.

Thanks guys especially blueprintstudios. So I'll be going down to City Music hopefully soon to get myself the POD Studio UX1.

Btw glowbox, I'm a student and I have barely just enough money to get myself the UX1 how you expect me to get a macbook? hahaa, I'll just stick to option two and use my family's handycam. Thanks to you too (:
