hello wonderful softies.

as per title, can anyone recommend me a practice amp?
just a small one like 15w will do.
i play metal, and maybe one that has good built in distortion.
if not, its ok, i will buy pedals anyway.

i have narrowed my choices to these:

Marshall MG microstack---------good review by mr sub
Roland cube 15/x---------------i like coz have built-in distortion effects from
boss pedals
MG15--------------------------heard some good reviews too
VOX pathfinder 15r-------------i like the design and heard VOX is good=))
Line6 Spider III----------------i donoe why. =))

any more recommendations? im looking like $200. but the microstack looks damn tempting.=))
i cant say which one is good coz im bad at judging the differences.

microstacks cost more than 200. But i'd recommend the cube!:D I love cubes! Hehehe. There are 4 different distortion types. Overdrive, Distortion, Metal and Metalstack (Correct me if i'm wrong) O and i'd say the Metalstack sounds best. :D

yea the cubes are great. i have the cube 30x and it has the metal (which is based on the peavey 5150) and the rectifier (which is based on mesa-boogie)...wicked wicked tone for a practice amp. but dont expect the modeling amp sound to sound EXACTLY like the originals.

i think the cube 15x has everything but the rectifier...i say save up abit more for the 30x.

hha yea i know microstack first hand is nearly $400. saw at mr sub's review.
and oh i added line6 spider III

wow thought they take the drives from the BOSS pedals, no?

1. so there's distortion in the CUBE15X but you need to hear this amp in use (if you've not already done so) to know if it's of any use to you. my take on the CUBE X series- get at least the 30X if you look forward to enjoy the default distortion modules, otherwise, consider others.

2. the Pathfinder 15R is a good base amp, neutral enough to accept & propel your pedal tones but it's not a representative of the VOX tone, which is largely tube-based.

do consider VOX's DA5 as well...

MTJR: what do u mean hybrid? it is a tube cum solid state amp? if it is, WOW.

Subversion: yeah never heard of the sound of cube15x. but i think i will only use the amp distortion temporarily. coz i will buy pedals anyway. vox da5 is rather small,no? did a research it actually does amp modelling?

ok maybe i'll up my budget. lets say...$300.

if u wanna get roland cubes
i suggest m.cube or cube 30

for da spider amps
u gotta hear it for urself
some ppl likes it some dun

but i think i will only use the amp distortion temporarily. coz i will buy pedals anyway.

it would then be wise to invest in an amp which would accept pedals well & avoid subsequent purchases; unless you are indeed gonna buy another amp in time to come...

i tot Roland cubes are tube amps? no?

can i get tube amps with my budget?

ok i narrowed my list, are they tubes?
-marshall MG15 microstack - tube?
-cube 15x - tube?
-vox ad15vt - tube
-vox pathfinder 15r - not tube

what do u think of these? i dont need on board effects much as i plan to buy a multi effects

none of them are pure tube. If you are getting multi effects (with amp modeling), you should go for very nice clean amp with bigger speaker which is Roland Cube 30.

To answer ur query, none of the amps mentioned (except the AD15VT, which is half tube)are tube amps. I wld give my vote to the Pathfinder 15R, while it isn't exactly a gd proponent of the Vox tone, wat u are looking for isn't exactly the Vox kinda tone either. If u want a Roland Cube, i suggest u go down to Standard Value and check out the Sound Drive MG series amps. Same in terms of features but clarity and sound quality are top notch and they take pedals pretty well too. The microstack is a nice amp, but for the money u can get better stuff out there. Try out everything, find the one u think is best, get it. Short and simple. If u want, u can ask a fellow, more expereinced SOFTie to go down with u.

yeah...fact is, ive never tried any of them. i shortlisted by reviews.

vox pathfinder- $120 2nd hand -----------try at swee lee?
cube 15x/20x/30x- $??????/$??????/$??????--try at swee lee?
MG microstack- $??????-------------------try at davis?

LutherMusic:
VOX Pathfinder 15R - $168
VOX Valvetronix AD-15VT - $345

Davis:
Marshall MG15MSII - $375

Sweelee:
Laney LX65R - $358
Laney LX65D - $414

Apart from the Voxes and Marshalls, I would highly recommend the Laney LX65R or LX65D. I've tried it out at Swee Lee and I find it really good. It is bassy due to the Celestion 12" speaker inside and the built in distortion can go from slight crunch to very very heavy. Don't settle for LX35s or LX20s though cause they sound quite different from the LX65 and they aren't half as nice sounding. You should try it out at Swee Lee but call them 1st to check if they have stock.
