hi all experts,

i need some good advice on helping me to choose my guitar. im kinda interested in the epiphone les paul special II. it is a good choice? or any other guitars you guys can recommend? budget $500 for guitar + amp. but fine in paying bit more for better choice

will this be your first electric guitar? hmm... honestly there are alot better choices out there, but it really depends on how the guitar feels in your hands.

eg. for my case, i never liked the feel of fender's neck profile.. so even if its a really good fender strat, i still wouldnt buy it because it just doesnt feel good playing with it.

I did try my goodfriend's J&D(Jack And Danny) Les Paul copy. I have also tried a MIK Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Both sounded great, thick sound i prefer. As i am on budget constraint, buying a J&D Les Paul copy at the end of the month. Try the Epiphone Special II at the guitar stores, purchase it if it suits you. Comfort, budget, style etc. There are many factors that you have to think about. For $500+, I am sure Softies will have ample recommendations and suggestions for you.

If you are into Les Pauls, CityMusic carries some Craftsman models which are very value for money if you don't mind the brand. I believe they are having a guitar pack promotion now. $360 for the GS100 pack is quite a steal.

Hi TS,

The special ll is not a bad model but it dosent have the standard les paul body shape.body being made of basewood, dosent give it the classic les paul sound.
i would suggest the rally les pauls at SV.but that leaves quite a tight budget for your amp.You could probably get a 2nd hand good 15watt amp for like 100+ here at soft.just some amps to recommend(roland cube 15x,marshall 15w,orange crush 15r)

Well, honestly for 500 bux for a guitar... u cant get much for anything new... however if u do search the forums, there are alot of used gems going for a good price...

you can easily get the spider 15 used for $100 so ur total will be about 600 for a decent guitar with an crap amp (which u will get anyway if u buy a starter pack)

I beg to differ. You can get a decent guitar for below $500 if you know where to look. Assuming the TS is looking for a Les Paul, I'd recommend the Rally Les Paul copies at Standard Value as well. I haven't played one personally but it's getting a lot of rave reviews... The Rally Les Paul copies cost $390.

Other well-recommended models include the Smash S2 and Timbre SR200 if you're into strats.

As for me, I'm using an Ibanez Gio and have used it for live performances. No issues at all. Quite affordable too (well below $500, and it's all stock) so I guess I'll buck the trend and recommend the lower-end Ibanez guitars as well. But Ibanez's quality control can be quite inconsistent so do check thoroughly before you buy. Mine is a Stratocaster-style guitar but it has a humbucker at the bridge position so I can get thick, warm humbucker tone as well.
