question from a guitarist

hey hi, im a guitarist in a band with a drummer who isnt so too familiar with music.

ive been always trying to get a bassist, but my drummer sometimes thinks its not neccesary and guitar and drums are enough for the band's music. i tried to explain that bass is to add the "background" to the song. well, he doesnt really really understand why.

how should i explain it to him?

thanks!

say, "dun like screw you get outta my face." Joking. I also dunno. :D

ask him to suck thumb and throw himself into the kallang river lah ..

okay .. just kidding .. maybe you can ask him to hold his breathe for 1 minute .. if he can tahan .. ask him to hold until he no more breathe ..

then explain to him .. "not having a bassist is like that .. you are able to breathe for a while .. but as time goes by you find it harder and harder to breathe up to a point when you just die beacuse you have no air .. so a bassist is like that .. we can survive with a guitar and drums for a while, but after a while if we keep trying to play songs .. we find that we are doing more work than we should .. "

if that doesn't work .. ask him to hear songs with solid bass parts .. e.g. .. erm .. Paul Jackson's Jr. 1:15 .. or most fusion jazz songs lah .. yeah .. i'm not a rock guy ..

make sure u get a GD bassist to do tt man..otherwise ther'll be no difference or things might get worse...

but it's really hard explaining to a noob y basssists r the heart of the band..n some bands juz hav bassists juz becoz tt is the 'tradition' tt all bands must at least hav a bassist, a drummer n a guitarist/guiatrists but they also dont really kno y...

it also took me a very long time before i learnt that it's just easier for someone to demonstrate a skill or a sound to you.

that's the main reason why i don't really learn much stuff online anymore... it's just much more efficient to learn face to face.

Hey Fenderrules.....

I really hate to break it to ya...but any drummer who says he doesn't need the bass is bascially hanging a huge , big neon signboard that says
"Time To Replace Me as A Drummer"

Ok Ok, sorry to gripe.

My suggestions beyond the obvious posted here...... ask him to play his rhythms as usual.... without the kick drum... that's what the music will be like.

alright man .. i still think you should ask him go suck thumb and fly kite ...

hahhah .. just get a drummer to play with him .. .. he'll know it soon ..

Hey Fenderrules......

guess what, i actually thought like that before to be honest. there was even a point i wanted to change drummer. so many times hes been confused about the guitar distortion covering the bass so much that he cant hear it. my friend's into emo screamo and hardcore, so i guess that gave him the impression.

gabriel has lots to learn..

quite true...but one thing im impressed about him is that he'll always stay a drummer and even work hard for that position.

my trick now is to do mostly covers this time, some like three doors down and all songs which has slow drum beats. this way, he'll slow down a bit, then go fast, faster and wooshh...

i can tell you, that gabriel also has improved alot from the day you met him. we gigged with my acoustic group at ang mo kio ite, with me as bass and him as drums. he managed to follow in beat with my bass notes..

Hey Fenderrules,

i hope we haven't been too harsh on yer drummer lah. anyways, all folks have to learn and still learning.. if he's doing well, it will prob take just a while longer for himm to get everything else he needs to be a steady and functioning drummer. So all the best for all the hard work ahead!
