Hi,

I had been taught to do the lip roll with the fingers on the sides of cheeks. My instructor did mention we could do it without the fingers on them. On YouTube, we can find videos of both versions.

I did some tests and realize it's unnatural to do lip roll with the fingers on the cheeks because it restricts the airflow and the vocal cord feels uncomfortable because it is narrower.

Somehow, I think the original method should be done without the fingers on the cheeks. Which method are you using?

Hi cloudwind,

I have been taking vocal lesson for about a year now, and lip roll was the first few warm up exercises we learnt, since it actually really loosen any tension in our throat. I would prefer to do lip roll without hand gesture on cheek, as the goal of the exercise is for the face muscle to relax completely and able to control the airflow from our diaphragm exhaling from our mouth.. on a side note, lip roll can be difficult for individual to gasp but once you get it.. you wont lose the feeling of doing it.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks josh. So are you learning and doing the version without the hands on the cheeks?

I learned this technique from SLS training. I watched a few videos on YouTube, some with that gesture and some without. I agree with you that without that gesture should be the correct one.
