problems on getting a drumset

hey guys,
i am an amatuer wanting to start playing drums.
i have no experience on drums at all.
i have no knowledge on drum brands and components...
i have a few problems on getting a drumset

firstly, i have a tight budget of 400,
after much calling up of swee lee, drum resources, ranking,
i realised that 400 bucks is not quite enough to get a basic drumset.
i do not need any high quality drum set but just a basic one.
could you kind readers please reccomend a not so expensive drum that is over my budget, lol

secondly,
my father mentioned that we live in a HDB with alot of late night shift neighbours,
we even have a family with 2 toddlers next door.
isit alright if i close the door and the sound will not be heard or do i really need intensive sound proof material that is seen in jamming studios.

thirdly,
i have no drumming experience at all,
i found a website freedrumlessons.com
that teaches drums.
but , there are some skills that they do not teach there,
so i was wondering if u would provide a set of skills which is needed for drumming and i would find the tutorials myself.

thanks !!
ur help is sincerly appreciated !!
:)

carlos drum sets are quite cheap. you can find cheap sets on soft also.

for noise concerns it really depends on how nice your neighbors are. for me i've been able to play with no trouble at all. but if you have a problem, then get an electronic kit or use mesh heads/ mufflers on your acoustic kit. it's quite expensive to sound proof your room (about 5-6k to properly proof it).

i suggest that you find a proper teacher. it's important. it's ok to learn from online sources but don't use it as your main source of learning.

isit ok if i learn drums from a music school 1st before purchasing 1 ?

Why not? If you or your parents are willing pay around $80-$100 per month, its quite a good way to start out drumming as you will get your basics correct.

I started out from a music school (Yamaha) too. However, there are also other good music schools out there, not only Yamaha. :)

But with a 400 budget, you can only get second hand sets from the Buy/Sell section. Do keep a lookout. Some can sell as low as 150. :D

As for your late-night-shift-neighbours problem, I think your only choice is getting mufflers or mesh heads. $400 is quite difficult to get an e-drums, not saying its impossible though.

Good luck!

hmm

Why dont you get a Electric DRum..
U can use head phone and can adjust the volume.
It's safer but i dont abt the price..
But it's safer..XD

Hello,
I would strongly suggest that you invest some money in enrolling yourself for drum lessons so that you can fundamentals correct, such as playing soft etc... It will help you have a good head start. I'm sure you'll also be motivated when you undergo the training from a professional as well.
As for getting a drumset without much knowledge, i.e. may be able to play basic beat and some small fill here and there, I would not encourage that.

Well, say you do not have money for drum lessons, I think it would be best for you to practice on a practice pad together with the videos online. Just to get coordination right. Wait for sometime when you get better and feel that drums is the right instrument for you. Then you can start to surf round the buy, sell section for drums. This is the way to go when you're starting out (:

Alright, from what I see from your second problem -> neighbours, I guess you'll need to compromise either the sound of your drums or the feel. Sound --> there's a thread on it by stuffing your drum shells. Feel --> mesh heads or drum mutes.
You might want to look out for smaller sets (i.e. smaller shells, bass drum of size 18" instead of 20" and 22" inch). This will help to keep the volume down.

Pearl Rhythm Traveler could be a commonly suggested set <-- but it does not come with resonant head (the bottom head) so you can only play with mesh heads or mutes on.

Also when buying a 2nd hand drumset, ensure that the hardware does not fall apart. Besides, I don't think you would be taking the set out for gigs right?

Personally I feel that intensive sound proof material would really burn up a lot of money which you can use to buy more drumming equipment.

Well of course you may disagree with me on some points. but i hope helps (:

wow... I have no idea how you find drum lessons at $80 for a 1/2h lesson per week. That's way too expensive for a beginner class! You can check out mydrumschool.com They have individual/group lessons. It's a great place for beginners to start off and they have reasonable pricing as well!
hope it helps you (:

budget of $400.. check out soft deals daily. People do sell their sets from $350-$500 inclusive of cymbals. Since ur a beginner, i dont think ull mind beginner cymbals. If the sound sounds shitty, change the drum heads(skin on the toms) and change the cymbals if u want.
U can learn easy patterns from youtube.
HDB noise wise... Actually u can make as much noise as u want before 10pm... but try not to la.. i have a drumset at home, stay in HDB, neighbours dont complain. NICE NEIGHBOURS:) thing is u can try to PREVENT and MINIMISE sound from travelling out from ur drums. buy a thick carpet if ur on a budget, helps to reduce ur bass(kick drum) a little.... so neighbour downstairs ont hear thumping sound and get irritated

Close all windows, draw curtains too.
This may not be very effective, but its a way to minimise noise .

Also, u can get mesheads and cymbal mutes. that one really not much sound come out one. hah. then again u have to invest in one... more than $50 less than $100 i think. Softies are selling if im not wrong. just google search it. yeap. but u must know the tom dimensions yea. dont get wrong one! to be safe, get cymbal mutes.

Also, TRY TO PLAY SOFTLY LA:) hahaha.

i use to play drums wif out sound seal alot of complain and police on the door knocking and i dont think u would wanna wack the drums softly right jamming studio i guess is the only choice u have now unless ur neighbours dont mind which is very unlykly

wahhhhh... no wonder i got so much response that time when i sold my mesh heads. i sold the whole prt set for $35

about space, i duno.. but about too much noise u can muffle it by stuffing some kinda fibre inside the drums. Its sticky on the How to - Drums thread. :D
