Problem: my bass skills went down

I got a hell one of a problem....

I played electric guitar n bass...

Currently, my guitar skills are improving slightly.. --> Been playin for a year plus...

But my bass skills went down as if I'm a total noob... --> Been playin for 5 months..

Can any SOFTies here tell me what's the cause of it??

Should I play scales before playin a proper cover song???

Itz like my hands are stiff... :(

you shouldn't learn 2 instruments at the same time. even though they look the same the guitar and the bass are 2 radically different instruments. Playing the bass is about groovin and lockin with the drummer even if its just 1 note jumpin up and down giving the pulse. the guitar on the other end plays wats over that givin u more colors.

When u play bass u also have to think like a bass player not a guitarist, if u think guitar and play bass you will realise that u will lose out alot of groove and u wont be able to come out with proper and nice bass lines. This happens cause ur mind will think more melody than harmony. when playing the bass you have to think harmony over melody all the time. for guitar usually its melody over melody unless your playin jazz guitar than ur mind will be intune more to harmony over melody like the bass.

after teachin afew pianists turn bassist and guitarists turned bassist i have to say tat its really difficult to learn both at the same time. i wont say its not possible but u will take more time to learn the basics for both. alternate picking on guitar and bass is very very different. 1 using a pick the other using your fingers. getting an even tone will take at least a month of dedication and constant practice and correction of mistakes for each of the instruments.

reference listenin is also different for bass i recommend u find some old school stuff buy larry graham, stanley clark or marcus miller, prince is also a nice place to find some nice groovy basslines to learn and study. guitar wise find songs by ur fav artists, there are so many guitarist that i won't bother mentioning anyone special but paul gilbert is a good place to start.

my 1 cent worth or ramblings again. hope it helped. If your gonna ask which instrument u should learn and master first i would say bass. :) my non-biased opinion.

Oh ok.. I get what u mean.. I think I rather dedicate myself to the world of bass cuz that's what i really want to master now...

Thanx for the tips... :)

It's a good idea to think of what direction you want to take, and to think of what kind of musician you want to become. Having that aim in mind will help to give you some direction in your learning.

Just keep at what you do, and don't be afraid to ask!

I think it's okay to play multiple instruments if you know where you're going.

I know for sure that I am always a bassist first and foremost.

I play rhythm guitar casually for fun, to get a feel of melody and chord changes and stuff.

I'd like to learn drums cause it's kinda fun and I think it would make me a better bassist too.

:D

i think it's okay to play multiple instruments, but you gotta make the decision of choosing a main instrument that you dedicate most of your time to in practising.
