hi folks, can anyone shed some light on what're the general market rates for beginners home guitar lessons? cheers.

wah, really?? that means i'm charging below average ~ $30 /hr
i just decided i might try doing this full-time and see how it goes. got 2 students already. i was worried i might be charging too much. thanks for the reply. anyone interested in beginner lessons can give me a PM or email. i've been playing for about 10 yrs. influences range from classic rock to alternative/grunge to melodic punk/death metal.

personally, i think top of the line guitarists aren't ideal to teach beginners. it's like asking Michael Jordan to teach you how to bounce and pass a basketball. an intermediate player is closer to the level of the beginner and will be more attuned to the problems and difficulties one will face in the early stages of learning to play. and also, good player does not = good teacher

beginner lessons should not cost over $30 ..

as you said.. its only bouncing/passing the ball .. the basics ..

you have a point when u say that an advanced player is more in tune with a beginner player's needs. And a beginner wont need a Professional guitarist to teach him pentatonics.. basic theory concepts..etc..
i tihnk what people are trying to say here is that.. pros are charging $30...and your rates are higher and unjustified.

just my thoughts... no offence ah

happy new year~

ok, but the first reply said average is $35-$45 /hr? i'm only charging $30 and you say beginner rates should not be over $30? so isn't it correct then? i remember years ago i paid about $25 for my lessons but that was coz he was my uncle's friend.

sometime i feel that a bginner have to be charge more... cos the destiny of guitarist depend a lot on his/her foundation... the rest is just technique

I have to disagree somewhat. Musicians should always be learning, no matter what level they are at. Every thing in music/life is connected, very much like the circle of fifths in keys. Being more 'pro' dosen't necessarily equate to being more distant to understanding beginners' needs.

Generally the rates for fees are still open market, and pretty much determinied by the teacher. I know some who teach less people and charge more, and vice versa.
