Power supply issue

Hi, could someone be so kind as to explain the different types of power supplies various pedals take?

For instance standard boss pedals use a 230v ac and converts it to 9v dc.

My white finger compressor uses 230v ac and converts it to 40vdc.

Are the adaptors which take 230ac and convert it to 9v ac ?and why does the particular pedal take in ac current instead of dc?

It's up to the manufacturer to set what kind of voltage supply their effects need.

There is NO de-facto or universal rule to the supply. Mostly is governed by the way they built the circuitry and the types of ICs used. Different ICs requires different supply. If you talking digital signals, it's mostly require 3/5VDC for the processing part. If you talking about the analogue OP-amps ICs, they acutally require + & - rail, but many work around with a single 9VDC supply.

There are many different types of ICs and circuits, so I can't list down all the requirements. The advancement of ICs these days require lower voltage to work, so a lot of digital effects these days only need a 6/9VDC rail to work.

Some effects need an AC supply due to the fact that inside the effects they will further rectify and spit to more working voltages internally.

ONE THUMB OF RULE!!! DO NOT MIX UP YOUR SUPPLY ADAPTORS!!!

Just plugging into the wrong supply, can & will ZAP your effects in an instant. Label your power adaptors properly to your various effects. Or it will be a costly venture for you.

You can always check with me if you need some fix or mod to your stuffs. Cause I fix and repair amps and effects.
