Hi all,

Im a newbie in P.A system as well as this forum, hope to get some recommendations from you guys. Im looking for a pair of passive speaker + power amp to be used in a small venue. Budget around 1k. Application will be more to unplug music, only guitar, keyboard and vocals.

Please give me some advise. Thank you. :D

Your playing requirements is quite easy to fullfil, as the demands are not big.

Plenty of ready systems in powered mixer or mixer amp packages, like Fender passport for easy transport and extremely portable. Almost all brands have such systems, to name a few: Peavey, Crate, Yamaha, Behringer, Walferdale Pro, Kustom, Smarvo...etc

Mixer starts with 4/6/8/10/12 mics input, plus stereo inputs. Basic effect is Reverb to digital effects (echo, chorus, delay, flange...etc).

You just have to work out how many inputs you require, and maybe leave a few extra for just in case.

The most affordable package is under $400, which is the Smarvo S4100 model, comes with a 4 channel mic/line inputs, individual tone and reverb control, master volume, reverb and 3eq controls, 100watts output, 2 X 10" PA speakers, 1 mic. If you are on a small budget, this could be your answer.

If you are getting like a Behringer PM2000, it pretty covers most grounds already with 9mic inputs, 4stereo inputs, digital effects, 250watts X 2 channels at 4ohms. Matching this with a pair of Delta P12 (300watts at 8ohm), you can even do basic mic up for a full band. This set should cost a little over your budget. This system should give a full good sound output.

Hi mikemann,

Thx for your reply.. So where can i find those Delta speakers locally? Izit active or passive? Are these Delta speakers of any good?

Actually thought of getting the Yamaha Stagepass300 but duno hows the sound quality.. Do u think it will be better if i go for seperates? Example; Yamaha p2500s and probably some cheaper range yamaha/ behringer passive speakers..

What do you think?

A seperate system, will increase your cost quite substantially. That's why mixer amp systems are a popular choice for a band's personal sound system. Cheap and good. As long as it serve your function as a performer, a seperate system which cost 2X,3X or even more, will not serve you better.

Delta is actually a local brand, this model P12 is very popular with local users due to it's price vs performance advantage. Do pm me if you are really interested.

Yamaha systems are robust and good performance. Brand wise also sound 'up' too.

I just got a demo set from citymusic pm600 whrafedale pro for 450. 2 x 150 watt speakers, 2 x speaker stands, 5 channel xlr i/p/6 1/4 inch i/p and rca i/p power mixer plus one wired mic. Is a afforable price. The only disadvantage is that the speaker only produce mono sound. But for low budget use i guess is quite reasonable. It sound not as bad as what i thought. Can be considered. :)

Shawn,

R u using the soundcraft E8 mixer? If yes, can u do me a favour? Hook up ur E8 to the PM600 and post me your impressoins of the sound quality.

Thx, dude.. :D

I dont have E8 mixer now(not mine one). My friend this sat will bring the E8 mixer to pump into amp with the pm 600 speakers(the mono speakers that in my house). I dont know will it be the same to pump into E8 into pm600 power amp and speaker. In my experience i use instruments(accoustic guitar, bass, digital drum,kb) direct into only pm600, the sound quality consider not so bad. In term of price i can say is quite reasonable. I compare the sound from pm 600 versus the JBL Ctrl 30. Of cse JBL is better but as cost wise i think is quite good. :)

Anyway i let u know after saturaday. :)

Hey Mark

My friend used M8 not E8 to plug into pm 600 speaker. He said the sound quality not bad. But the vocal part might not response too well due to freq response. This is what my friend(experience sound engineer) told me. :) So u can decide what u want...Check out citymusic shop to test it sound quality i suggest.

Shawn,

I tried some active monitor spkrs over at citymusic but is not the type of sound im looking for.. So i bot the Wharfedale EVP-15P.. Big baffalos.. Overkill for my small room.. But quite like the sound and oso value for $$ lah.. 50% off original price.. :D

Btw, thx for recommending me this brand of spkrs..

Is the sound system going to be mostly situated at a single venue or always moving around? If u gig a lot and bring ur own system, den u shud get a sturdy portable system, like mackie, which like they say "built like a tank", dam hard to spoil and the sound is also pretty good. Delta are pretty good sounding and cheap. China brand.
Ask yourself, do u wan active or passive? Like u said, small venue, you probably want to go for actives, as u do not need a very strong amp to deliver loud volumes across the venue. But if it is usually situated at a place, get a passive speaker and line them up with great amps, you'll get a better sound.
And as our fellow softies suggest u to consider how many channels you need. Get a mixer that can do the job.
