Portnoy QUITS Dream Theater !!??!!

Came upon this piece of news after Neil Zaza's status update... Mike's quitting DT, claiming that working endlessly with DT has "burned" him out and stuff. Extremely heart wrenching article to read, don't know what to feel man, was really looking forward to their next album :(

Wow that sucks, I thought it sucked when someone like Portnoy joined Avenged Sevenfold but now he quits Dream Theater? oh dear....

i mean i don't mind if he helps avenged sevenfold , but quitting dream theater ??? truly sad story . but after i read his press release , i just hope he didn't make the wrong decision to leave the band . i'm still a fan of MIKE PORTNOY AND DREAM THEATER

Today was my last paper and I got to enjoy freedom and I see this BS.

I now have a reason to hate A7X and all you A7X lovers can forget about changing my mind.
 
Don't know if there will be any official word from the other guys, cause from the way MP has written, it sounded as though the others were the bad guys. But really, I believe that DT should at least be the main focus for MP and definitely not A7X.
 
Sad news... I really hope there's no ill-feeling between Mike Portnoy and his ex-bandmates, even though there seems to be some unhappiness. Sigh...

Then again, surely Portnoy can't expect the whole band to take a break just because of him, but on the other hand, perhaps Dream Theater as a band could take a break too, looking at how hard they work.

But what can we DT fans do...
 
He didnt quit for A7X, he just quit because Dream Theater didnt wanna take a break. But still man why would the likes of Portnoy with Godly status help out A7x?
 
Portnoy had always been trying to push the band to do a more generic metal sound instead of a more progressive sound, in my opinion. Guess he wants to take a break to explore and enjoy playing the generic metal he now appreciates?

Apparently, he claims that he wanted Theatre to take a hiatus but the others didn't agree with him. Can't say that he hadn't got it coming - he's the only one working throughout 2010 (with his helping of other projects) and he got burnt out from doing all that
 
I'm saddened by the news too but at least respect his decision. No point hating on A7X. He feels he needs a break and how can you blame anyone else or any band if it's Portnoy's choice to leave or join whoever he wants.

He quotes this himself. We will never forget the DT of yesterday but at the same time look forward. To the future of progressive drumming!
 
oh daaaaang this sure is bad news. :[ awww i won't get to see him with dream theatre live anymore. D:

and whats with the a7x hating? not like he's leaving dream theatre for them.
 
Portnoy helped out A7X because he was the late Rev's favourite drummer. I think that was a good move on Portnoy's part; drumming for the band of one of his biggest fans. But hey, it's not like he helped out some amateur band. If you listened to the Nightmare album, you'd hear Portnoy did his very best to emulate The Rev; and he sure did a good job!

Dont you think thats because Rev emulates Portnoy?
 
i think DT has gotten stale for awhile already and they really need to take a hiatus, so portnoy is right. hopefully portnoy's departure wakes the rest of DT up. they need to freshen up and write better songs.
 
20 odd years as a touring musician. I often wonder about their relationship with their family.
As far as I go, he's one hell of a drummer and I will buy his work, old or new.
I believe his next project will be kickass too. Let's wait and see.
