Playing modes : Ionian

Hi Guys,

I'm kinda practicing on modes now(well, Ionian) and would like to know which fingers to use:


---0---|---0---|-------|---0---|------- 1
-------|---0---|-------|---0---|------- 2
---0---|-------|---0---|---0---|------- 3
---0---|-------|---0---|---0---|------- 4
---0---|---0---|-------|---0---|------- 5
-------|---0---|-------|---0---|------- 6

Just learning to go up and down on the scale, and realized that I can actually go two things for strings 3&4. One is to use fingers 1,2,3 and the other is to use finger 1,3,4.

Any advise on which is the better fingering to use???

Which ever is more comfortable, 1 3 4 is the most common way so when you get to the high e you don't have to reposition your fingers.

Thanks for that... I actually found it quite simple to use 123 too, but I will use 12 for the 2nd string, and it feels weird to move back to 124 on the last string.. .Think I will juz use the 134 method.....

Btw, any special licks for learning modes(e.g this one)??? I'm feeling comfortable going up and down, and am looking for different methods to pick rather than the boring straight up or down...

This is typically called a 'closed postion' where within a 4 fret box you strictly use 1 finger assigned to one fret. It feels weirdest for this particular Ionian form because of the 2-4 on the B string, but it's an excellent exercise.


To practice different picking patterns, ascend and descend in intervals, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths 7ths, Octaves within key. Try alternate picking and make sure you get good solid tone from each note.

Thanks guys.. Well, I found an easier way to do the Ionian mode, which uses 3 notes per string.... The last 3 strings look like

-------|---0---|---0---|-------|---0---|-------
-------|---0---|---0---|-------|---0---|-------
--0----|-------|---0---|-------|---0---|-------
--0----|-------|---0---|-------|---0---|-------

Any idea which is the correct way of playing the modes... They are both Ionian modes....
