hey man, i wld recommend playing along to cds that have drums already
1. you want to make sure ur groove can "sit" with the music
2. you want to get the feel of genre and the drummer who's playing.
wat i normally do is practice the grooves for tht genre with a metronome, making sure i'm relaxed and in time. then i work on getting them up to speed, then i play along to CD's of certain drummers who are renowned in tht genre, eg steve jordan for funk and blues, jeff hamilton for jazz just abt any caetano veloso album for latin.
this is wat worked for me, you need to find wat works for you

playing with cd's that have drums already is more of taking over some licks of the drummer, his style's and learning the roots of the genre. this is mainly for drummers to have some influnce and inspirations on the different style's he may utilize.

playing without drums is another case. it helps the drummer to use his own creative and thus makes the songs ultimately his. this method enables the drummer to groove along to what he would expect when playing with a band.

these two situations prove to be helpful in different situations.
