hey guys, what are piezo? an ibanez model RG1820X Prestige has piezo in the bridge. what does this mean? and what does piezo do? can i remove them?

It's a special pickup placed at the bridge to produce a sound close to that of an acoustic guitar. It picks up vibrations from the strings directly, unlike magnetic pickups that pick up electrical signals from the strings moving. Correct me if I'm wrong though...

a piezo pickup or UST (Under saddle pickup) is a thin strip of material, either a film or ceramic strip under the saddle.

It picks up the guitar sound via string pressure as your guitar's played. Because it works in this way (pressure vs vibration), this is one of the least natural sounding pickup which is very prone to being very quacky, especially when strummed hard.

Other pickups would be Mic (most accurate but most feedback prone), Magnetic (good feedback resistance, and with humbucking kinds like Baggs M1 and Fishman, can sound very good and pretty natural).

The ones i like most are SBT (sound board transducer). these are attached to the body of the guitar and pickup the vibrations in the soundboard. These sound closest to the mic character, and have relatively good feedback resistance. I personally use the K&K sound systems.

PM me and I can tell u more. =)
