hey Fellow Softies,

need your advice. I have a Maestro ED-2 and im thinking of installing a pickup so i can use it for my acoustic gigs. Either connect to PA or to an amp when playing live. Any recommendation on what pickups are pretty decent in the market? Should i go for active or passive pickups? Appreciate all the advice i can get here..

Go back to maestro and request for their bband. Or go for the fishman (aveo?) Taylor uses it. But generally, The ed2 is sweet and balance and i wouldn't put a pick up in as cutting te wood may result in some loss of tone. Well that's just me. Good acoustic with pups, are pretty cheap this days...

well i dont have the luxury of owning 2 guitars so i have to put a pickup on the Ed-2.. was looking at the bband .. i saw some of the maestro guitars have passive pickups also.not sure whats the main diff

Hi Rohai, I know Maestro guitars pretty well, and am happy to give you my opinion on the best pickups for your model. Some pickups that I like most are sold in the American and Canadian markets - Fishman Infinity, LRBagg, BBand (also nice). If you need help to install and set-up your guitar, I am happy to help you. I'm only in Singapore for a week. Richard Aubut Luthier (www.richardaubutluthier.com; SG cell 84384409)

The difference between active and passive pickups is that the former needs a battery (9V) to operate. Usually active pickups comes with on-board equalization controls or even a tuner. A passive pickup usually consists of a piezo under-the-saddle pickup. Some do have a tone and volume control, but otherwise the passive pickup tone and volume are controlled at the amp or mixer.

The popular brands are Fishman. L.R. Baggs and B-Band, and you can't really go wrong with these. These brands do carry passive pickups although they are more known for their active ones. If you intend to gig regularly, I would suggest using an active model for more versatility.

thanks for the advice bros. I managed to get hold of an acoustic pedal from a friend of mine so was looking at using passive pickups and control all the EQ from the pedal. Was also looking at getting the LR Baggs Anthem SL.. a friend of mine has it on his lakewood and it sounds quite sweet with very very low feedback.. Anyone else using the LR Baggs?
