Pickup recommendations for 7-string (poplar body)

Hi softies!

I am playing a Peavey Predator 7 string, Floyd Rose bridge. The body is made of poplar, maple neck I think n rosewood fingerboard. I mostly play modern rock.

The stock pups are decent but I want something with more bite! hehe:cool:

So far I've listened to SD Blackouts n Dimarzio Crunch Lab 7 and found them to be pretty awesome.

Any other recommendations?

Thanks!

I'm not familiar with any pickup combinations when it comes to poplar but you can try out Dimarzio Blazes. I'm not too sure about the tonal characteristics of Poplar but the MIM Fenders sound good with any pickup that would match with an alder bodied guitar. Dimarzio blaze sound good on Alder / Basswood.

They are hot pickups and definitely treble heavy. sounds like something you would like.

Hmm, I used to own one of those, but the fixed bridge version. Stock pickups sounded kinda muddy. But I would say go for the Crunch Lab and Liquifire combo. Safe and good choice.

However, if you're interested in getting a new 7 string, the Schecter Omen 7s have caught my eye. Only mod I would do to it is to swap out stock pickups as well.

i second the crunchlab and liquifire. never regretted them. your cleans sound awesome. your distortion sounds more awesome. lol. but you can seriously hear the difference in stocks and the crunch lab liquifire. the chugging becomes clearer and anything with that low five semitones really become less muffled. really important for that tight as hell sound.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Anyway, anybody has any experience regarding TESLA pickups?

They have a 7-String pickup too, PLASMA 71.

My experiences with Tesla pickups are that they are more to "vintage" specs. Well, most of their pickups anyway, so if your looking for super hot pickups they are not gonna be your thing.

Do note that for Dimarzio or any other pickup maker, the 6 string variant of the pickup might vary slightly from the 7 string variant. it's not fair to compared based on what you hear from the 6 string version.

I feel that pickups react differently to different wood. I think it would help the TS if you recommend a pickup and state what wood that pickup was fitted on.

I would recommend Dimarzio Evo 7. tried a pair of them in a RG7620 and they are very rich in terms of harmonics. I liked em for those crazy floating bridge harmonics.

don't the blaze and evo's have very similar sound signatures? they're both from steve vai aren't they? madwerewolfboy had an evo in his pac. way too hot or something. probably agree that it's best for harmonics. but for the blaze they sound a bit too sharp for me. piercing sound.

Blazes sound very nasal whereas Evos are warmer in comparison. Similar only because they sound good with high gain.

Honestly, I am big fan of Dimarzio pups. I have EVO's installed my 6-string RG and those things scream loud! hehe

I have decided to get SD Blackouts. I've always wanted to try Active pups anyway:p

Thanks for the replies everyone!

oh yea, evos have a signature sound i can't stand using.. and i don't play vai stuff!

TS: if you want a more neutral pickup, the PAF 7's would be a "safe" choice that would be able to handle almost anything.

My online order got screwed up so I took it as a sign to change the pups I ordered! LOL

Like I said, I'm a big fan of Dimarzio, So the crunch lab and liquifire 7 it is!

I just love Dimarzio's coz of the tone is more agrressive and has bite to it.

active pickups might not fit directly into your default pickup cavity. make sure you make the proper measurements before taking the plunge.

blackouts have no battery so it should fit perfectly fine eh. aww yeah. another liquifire and crunchlab kaki. set.
