will removal of pickup covers brightens up the tone or output?

metal cover on a humbucker (if you remove them right) = yes slightly more treble

metal covered humbuckers need to be unsoldered. The bottom edges are solder to the bottom of the pick up.

Also if it's a cheapo pup - like some oriental copies your "humber" mite actuall just be a "single coil in disguise" ..yes I've seen it before.. waht u wud then have is a spoilt messed up pup ...
