Pickup Combinations...

which pickups go together and sound great and which dont? Looking to get a metal, crunchy tone. Any recommendations anyone :?:

well if you are looking for a tight crunch similiar to metalica or megadeth. you will want a humbucker at your bridge... with a high gain amp..or a dist pedal...
a compression sustainer will help enhance the sound.

I've seen a lot of manufacturers put out gibby styled guitars with SD 59 necks and SD JB bridges.

Crunchy and ideal for classic metal.

Got both mine second hand.

However, this is what Davis quoted me for the EMG60 and 81 combo a while back:
It will cost you S$300-S$320 with installation depending on the type of model you have. Do bring your guitar down and we'll provide you a quote.
Cheers

the emgs have a more modern sound... i had a rg580 with 2 EMG 85s....
the 81s too "hot" . my prs has a sd59 at the neck .. and a duncan super distortion at the bridge.
both kick SERIOUS ASS...

What would you guys think of this combination, Dimarzio Cruiser Neck, Fender American Single Coil Middle, Seymour Duncan JB Jr in the bridge of a strat?

What guitar do you use? Since you want metal sound, i assume you have humbuckers in both bridge and neck. I recommend a SD JB in the neck and a SD Duncan Distortion in bridge. You can also try EMGs 81 and 85, but i personally do not like EMGs, sounds all the same to me.

Looks OK, though my preference is to have the same neck and middle pickups. In combo, they tend to sound better.

It'll help too if the neck and middle pickup sound optimal running off the same pot values; be it 250k or 500k.

In essence, there are no rules; just use ur ears.

I'm not an EMG person either. But I have had a guitar that had both 81 and 85 pickups. And there is a very obvious tonal difference. The 81 with ceramic bar magnet and the 85 with alnico II, they have the distinct characteristics of these magnets. Ceramic being rather harsh and alnico II sounding "loose".

Running the humbucker at 500K and the singles at 250K would be good too.

A Fender Mex Strat sss configuration. Just into the pickup experiments. I'm not really for EMGs, never liked the idea of an additional hole in the back for a battery. Besides i feel that EMGs sound the same in any guitar, sterile and all. Actually i was hoping that the set i chose would be versatile. Ya know, Cruiser for the vintage smooth overdriven tones, the fender single coil to do the hendrix/bluesy stuff and the JB Jr for sweet classic tones. I heard the JB sounds nasal when wired out of phase, anyone had the experience?

HS3 bridge [thick mellow]
HS2 middle [old skool tones] - height is a touch lower
Virtual Vintage 54s bridge [vintage twang to modern tones]

this config works brilliantly on my 10yr old Am-Std strat - both in studio n live :)

81 kinda sux for me....too harsh, bright sounding pretty much useless except for metal....

but hey, randall did ask for a metal type of tone and I think that the 81 does a damn fine job, other pickup that I like is the L 500 which Dimebag used to use b4 he switch over to Seymour Duncan. I dun really like teh SD version.

I have that combination in my les paul, don't you find the steve's special a little shrill?

Not really.. Abit of tweakin with the EQ does the trick.. Just love the clarity I get playing chords even with high-gain distortion...
