Hi guys,

Just curious on the difference between these two pickups.

what are the sounds like? Are they able to sing blues as well as they scream hard sounds?

Also, to get that Clapton "woman tone" which pickups will be best suited?

thanks a million!

Hmm.

P90 tones and mini-humbuckers tend to be similar in the sense that the kind of sound is between a single coil and a humbucker.

A P90 is still a single-coil, and you will get the chime but also the hum and noise that is commonly associated with single-coils, with extra oomph in the low mids such that when driven it sounds very close to a humbucker.

Mini Humbuckers are kind of the other way around, in the sense that they are already humbuckers but due to their lower output they still sound very good when played clean (depending on whichever musical context) but when driven have a top end bite / scratchiness that can be heard in single coils.

I plan on getting an SG for that case. Would it be advisible? I was considering firebirds, sweet tone and all, but the price i guess is just not practical. Any other reasonably priced guitars that can fit the bill?

Hmm.

I personally own an epi firebird VII and a G-400 modded with a humbucker-sized P90 in the bridge and all I can say is hands down the firebird is more versatile clean or driven, but the SG has more kick-ass driven tones, and it's much more rock-out friendly, as the firebird is a pretty long instrument.

thanks for the info! But can you advise me which is better?

if i get a G-400 and mod it with mini hums

Or directly acquire a Gibson that already has p90s?
