HmmZ ... hiya guys ...

noob wannab bassist here ! currently on e lookout for my guitar .. i m planning to play classic rock and roll and mayb a lil alternative .. anybody can recommend which type of bass ? p-bass or j-bass ? i heard j-bazz got more tone options ...

or should i get one with dual p /j pickups ?

anyone got any good basses to recommend or sell >?

Between a typical P & J, I would go with a J. You could simulate the tone of a P by soloing the neck pickup on a J Bass, but having only 1 pickup position on the P limits tonal choices.

No, depending on the controls, u could either use the blend pot to select only the neck pickup or turn off the vol control on the bridge pickup. I would assume that the J has 2 J pickups.

yea it has 2 J- pickups ... icic thanks alot fretless .... hmmz i plan to get craftsman bass isit good ? cos i remember someone saying he got a FJ -10 jazz bass model pretty solid ... looking at tt one now

I think you might fare better going through the classifieds for used gear. You usually get more bang for your buck there. Check out the ads here and don't forget Luther's as well - gear aplenty at great prices.

As for the bass - only you can tell what's good for you. Don't limit yourself to p or j. Go and play/listen to all the basses that fall within your budget and decide from there what's the sound that you're looking for.

Word of advice - don't be pressured to buy a bass straightaway after you've tried one. Spend at least a day going over your options and checking to see if you can buy it cheaper elsewhere/used. Money saved can be used for other important stuff like strings/strap/case/tuner/amp...

haha i did

list

1) ibanez jump start package --> GSR guitar made in indonesia not worth buying
2) yamaha RBX -170 --> made in indonesia + lanley HPB -15B bass amp --> sound wise not too good .... lanley amp no stock
3) J & D all wood bass --> electronics not so good
4) epiphone bass package ( shortscale bass + miserable 10 w travel amp_
5) craftsman bass + VOx amp( most possible candidate to get)
6) washburn bass package ( out of stock at swee lee )
7) samick "special bass " + samick amp

haiz most of e guitars above made in indonesia then i heard its like good guitars with brand names but sound and playability wise is left much to be desired ... Haiz ... like finding a good bass package below 450 damned hard sia

i rate the Indonesian Squier highly, having tried the P-Bass special that comes in a matte finish. it's not about the country of origin, really... it's what you get in the end- something you either like or don't...

the most affordable J-type bass i've come across is the Samick Fairlane

reallY ? hmmz what is tt squire model ? can i get it @ swee lee or sumthing ? hmmz .. kinda bias against indonesian bass cos like e neck is glued to the body so cant remove the neck ? and i heard indonesian necks are bad

With $450, you're pretty much stuck with lower-end instruments. You might want to look out for a used yamaha bbn5a - that might just fit into your budget... though I can't say for sure.

glued in necks are called set-necks & these don't go for cheap. most sub-$400 bass feature bolt-on necks ie. the screwed in version.

the p-bass special i mentioned here is this bass:

it's a rather versatile beast because it features both P & J type pickups...

i checked it out at swee lee today !

hmmz something disturbing at swee lee ... when i asked for this bass @ aljunied two guys told me dun have ... one (chinese balding) guy told me the stock the have is a squire version of american jazz bass ( which so happened to be on the same rack and so completly off cos he cant even tell e pickups apart and a squire is much cheaper than fender) and the second guy was much nicer and checked it up for me and said dun have ...

later i went to swee lee brash basah
it turned out they carried e special ! but i discovered y when u buy at swee lee u can ask for discounts ... GST is not included in e price ! they give u list price ... then they cut 20 % off then they add GST ! swee lee does carry this special percision bass ...

Thanks for the recommendation subversion! i liked its feel but its way outta my budget ... top 500 for this baby alone without gig bag or anything even after discount just plain guitar alone ... thanks alot subversion !

affordable ? yes...
but realiable.... think abt it...

many people overlook the Greg Bennett series samick which aren't representative of the others offered by this brand name.
